I have a 1995 740iL with 160,000 miles on it. I checked the service records for the last 6 years or so and found no reference to any a/c service. My a/c is working okay, but not great. I did replace the recirc filters and that helped a TON with the volume of air. But, it still isn't cooling all that well. Last week when it was only 70-75, it was only cooling down to 60 degrees (as measured with a thermometer at the vent). So, I am pretty sure my 134a is low.

I do not have a set of gauges, but my car does have a sight glass. So, can I just buy the can of 134a from the parts place that has the cheesy hose connection on it and add some while watching the sight glass. I am thinking in 12 years, it has lost some pressure. I know if I put TOO MUCH 134, it will make it worse, but if I put in about a half of can and then check the temp and its better and then add a little bit more at a time until I either use up the can or the temp stops dropping, will that work?

you can buy the can with a gauge-read instructions, no guessing needed

12 degrees below outside temp is normal

Spend the money at a qualified A/C shop to have the system properly serviced. Not expensive. Consider replacing the drier if more than 7 years old, and have tracer dye installed.

+1 This seems really easy. But the techs have all the vacuum tools and only charge you for what you need.

Versus a guess...and leftovers.

agree with tracer dye and dryer.

I went ahead and bought a cheap set of gauges. It was low (not by much) and I added about 1/2 to 3/4 of a can. The a/c is VERY COLD now. Works great!

I was surprised how easy this was. (knocking on wood to make sure I didn't screw anything up.
