Ellipsoids are projector lamps. Big glass reflector in the middle. Non-ellipsoids are a standard looking lamp. For US Spec cars, both use use the same bulbs (9006), "smileys" like the ones on my T use H1 bulbs. These are non-US spec lights and are absolutely awesome, specially when combined with HID's.
OP good luck with the sale, they look really clean.

Yeah, no smileys here. Still a good upgrade over sealed beams, especially if you do the 9005 bulb mod:

Thanks for the clarification! Few more questions for you - What model e34's don't come with ellipsoids stock? Most I see come with them. Are you able to put on HID's without getting smileys? And is tehre a way to fix my pitted lens or only option to buy new ones.

According to realoem.com 09/90 through 09/93 production had "free form" or non-ellipsoid lights.
You do not need "smileys" to run HID's but it is recommended that you use ellipsoid lamps as the light disbursed will be more controlled.

Huh. I guess that might explain why my car does not have them -- it's 9/90. For a minute there I thought it might be because the front end was wiped out at one point. That wouldn't surprise me, except it's pretty straight. Good to know at any rate.
I'm holding out for smileys Ben You don't have a nice set of those laying around do you :D

WOW!
Ask about half and you might move them... There are smiley's for sale for less than that that haven't sold in a long time.
Nice lights otherwise.

Thanks guys. I'm in no hurry to move them, and I had estimated their value based on completed eBay listings, but maybe I'm a bit high ;).
I added a "Best Offer" button on eBay so that people can send me an offer.
Maybe, just maybe this link will work:

That's a little lower than I'm willing to go at the moment. Thanks for the compliment on the E30 though!
