the auto transmission on my 88' is acting up.
coming off from stop lights it will periodicly not shift till the rpms are way up or until i gas it hard enough...
also sometimes at freeway speeds it will slip out of gear then re-engage
is this just the clutch or am i looking at a whole transmission failure soon?
either way something is wrong how much am i looking to spend to fix this problem?

It sounds like a problem with the shift valves in the valve body. I'd do a drain and refill, then add a can of K&W's "Trans-X" varnish remover (made by CRC), run it and let it soak for a couple of weeks and then change the fluid and filter, and see if that works.
I went through a similar thing with a badly slipping tranny in an old '81 Dodge pickup. The first time it slipped, I changed the filter and refilled it and all was fine for about a year.
When it started slipping again last thanksgiving, I changed the fluid and filter, but it still slipped. I then drained some fluid and added a transmission flush and ran it in neutral as per the instructions. I then drained it, changed the filter, refilled it and included a can of fluid that included a varnish cleaner meant to be left in (K&W's "Trans-X" varnish remover, made by CRC). But it still slipped badly and I was resigned to rebuilding the tranny. So I parked it and put the ATSG* Transmission Manual on my Xmas list and forgot about it until we got a warm spell just after Christmas. So, I took it out to get an accurate list of symptoms to compare with the diagnostic chart in my new ATSG Manual sitting under the tree. To my amazement, not only did it drive away without slipping, it actually drove the best since i've owned it!! Shocked As i studied the diagnostic chart, I realized that the only cause that was in common with all of the symptoms was a sticking valve body, so it makes sense that a varnish cleaner helped. It just took more then an afternoon for it to work, it had to soak for a while.
If it is not the valve body, then it could be the front or "A" clutch pack that is going bad. Here is the service letter about it with links to rebuild procedures with pictures. Below is the link to the Overhaul Manual:
