View Full Version : Another cupholder mod - IKEA Style

I was taken to IKEA yesterday by you-know-who, and happened upon these 99-cent plastic containers designed to hang on a rod in a kitchen or bathroom. They have a similar lip as the WalMart cupholders, but not as deep.

The end tab of the lip faces downward, normally... I bent it to face upward, then slipped it into the crack between the plastic and and upholstered area under the center console... one for the driver, one for the passenger.

Not only is it cheaper than the WalMart cupholders, but it looks a lot better and is more functional, since it's a fully enclosed cup, and not just strips of plastic... so you can keep whatever you want in there.

it's large enough to hold a 1 liter bottle of soda or water, and it's tapered toward the bottom, so it can also hold a can securely. there are a few small drain holes at the bottom, so you don't have to worry about a puddle of sticky nastiness.

i tried really hard to find it for you guys on the IKEA website, but came up empty. I'm pretty sure all IKEAS are the same; it's in the kitchen tools section, around where the ladles and hanging baskets are.

edit: ARRRRRGGH. i don't have enough posts for picture or linking privileges... so you guys will just have to wait.

So instead of in the cup holder, it goes onto your carpet? :confused

that's a pretty weak flame.

have you looked at other cupholders? they're just bars or wires or strips... so these will leak a helluva lot slower than any other cupholder, giving you valuable time to grab a paper towel for underneath.

Hrm...I don't know if I could roll like that. Doesn't that get in the way of your throttle leg? I'd put mine on the passenger side.

VicAjax

it actually doesn't get in the way of anything... oh, and there's one on the passenger side as well.
they fit perfectly under the leg, totally out of the way.

i was inspired by this thing (http://www.ultimatecupholders.com/)... but my version is $48 cheaper.

would look better on black carpet too, it's certainly worth a try for the price.

i don't understand the need...if i drink something on the road it has a scew top and fits under my right arm between me and the center console...anything else is not allowed in any of my rides...

I believe i've seen these on ebay. But hows the drink hold in? It doesn't spill or anything does it? Looks like there is coffee stains on your carpet.

definitely would look better on black.. the containers come in white and pink too. if you're into that sort of thing.

well, i'm a Manhattanite and a family man, so more often than not my rides consist of long road trips full of people who get thirsty.

no spills yet... cans and bottles hold secure. they've been in for exactly 2 days and one drive, so i'll let you know how they hold up.

the stains you notice are part of the reason i needed actual working cupholders, as opposed to the stock catastrophe designed by a drunk BMW engineer. if my mod holds up, the floormats will be replaced.

how's the transition been?

we flirted with moving out of town, but i got creeped out by all those tall things with the green stuff at the top.

we lived on UWS 79th and amsterdam, now dobbs ferry....its night and day...good and bad...things actually close in the burbs, and not a ton of delivery places either...everything is usually a car ride...but we have a place where we can actually keep our stuff 700 sq.ft to 2500 ...a back yard, grill, garage...and the schools are really good...

yes trees are weird, but bugs are worse...

We're not YOU. :lol

Sheesh guys, it's a car. We're in america. We drink and drive.

I know, some are anal about thier cars, but to me, what fun is the car if you and your passengers have to act all ....oh I don't know the words for it.... on guard all the time?

I can understand if one doesn't want anyone smoking but drinking? C-mon. Just don't spill your drink please.

$hit happens!

O.P. I like your IKEA holders.
