View Full Version : Went to the drag strip and broke.

I went to the drag strip today, and achieved my goal of a 13 second 1/4 mile on the first pass :)

On the second run, I had alot of wheel hop and my passenger side rear engine mount bracket snapped. Not the mount itself, but the bracket that connects the mount to the engine.

Are there aftermarket, or stronger mounts available so I can not worry about it breaking again?

R/T .174
60' 2.126
1/8 9.030
mph 81.92
1/4 13.936
mph 100.89

It was about 90 degrees outside, and that was my only good run, since I broke on the second. Hopefully I can improve on that. :D

I'm pretty sure it's #2 in this diagram.

You can buy tubular ones that the FI guys run...

How old are the engine and trans mounts? I think there may be too much movement. The arm should not break.

Sounds like a good run minus the failed parts. How do you like the 3.38 LSD ? I am considering making that move as well.

i would buy another oem bracket and check your motor mounts and tranny mounts.

How are your shocks? Wheel hop can really rip things apart in any car.

Yeah I have to limit how hard I rip the takeoff on autocross runs or I get mad wheel hop as well. I usually end up with an oscillating slight loss of traction which I consider a pretty good compromise of not destroying my car with a pretty quick start.

My goal is FI in 3 months so I might go that route..Depends on the cost really :)

No telling. I got the car less than a week ago. I can tell you that I can shake the engine in the car with one hand. :(

I LOVE it. I really can't imagine a better combination. It's livable on the freeway, and short enough to get a good launch. Do it, you won't regret it!

That is probably what I'm going to do for now.

For sure check your front subframe mounting points. I recently noticed that both engine mounts nuts had ripped through the sheetmetal on my 95, and the engine was being held in place by gravity and the transmission mounts alone. And my car is bone stock, not FI. If you broke an engine mounting bracket I'd bet money that your subframe mounts are toast too. If you plan to go FI then reinforcing the subframe is a must.

I think the issue would be up front, not in the back. The DS would probably move enough to absorb any problems back there so they would not break a mount arm up front. I have over 400 rwhp and have not broken any mounts, but ALL my bushings and mounts have been replaced. I think all M3s have reinforced subframe mounting points.

No further reinforcement is needed except in extreme situations. Then the list includes differential support bracket, reinforced trans bracket, swaybar mount reinforcement, front subframe reinforcements, rear shock tower mount reinforcements, front strut reinforcements, and rear trailing arm pocket reinforcements.

The diff support, shock tower, and strut mount ones are the most popular, with swaybar tabs after that. I use all of those.

I would say the car needs to be looked at by someone who knows the cars well. It probably has some deferred maintenance. The OP may be one of several owners who has tried to see how fast they could make it go in the first week of ownership and without verifying the car's condition.

I just checked it out, and found this:

The passenger side engine mount's nut is gone. Not pulled through the subframe, just gone..

The left engine and mount are hanging by a ground wire...

The driver side mount has disintegrated....

And I do know these cars well....I have owned 5 BMW's....I am no noob..

Oh yeah, that missing nut would for sure cause problems. Wow. I wonder if the nut came off first and then the driver side mount disintegrated, or if the driver side mount came apart and caused the nut to back out?

It does not seem like you know these cars well. You bought one without checking it out and then abused it. Then you posted here asking why the mount broke and how to avoid it breaking again in the future. Anyway, now you probably know what the problem is and that you do not need a fancy aftermarket engine mount arm.

Seriously, lose the condescending attitude.

It seems you would want to be a bit more kind to people who share the shame passion for cars as you.

It is an M3. The car is not meant to be babied around running groceries.

I did not ask why the engine mount broke. It is pretty obvious why it broke.

Please, do not waste my time or your own by replying in this thread or any of my future threads.

Thanks

If you learn about these cars and maintain them well, you won't have to worry about breaking mounts. It is people who don't know the cars and have no idea mounts are missing bolts and disintegrating and drive the cars to dragstrips in such poor condition that suffer stupid breakdowns like this. No need to buy an aftermarket stronger mount to fix an operator error.

Before posting, please do some basic research on these cars so you do not waste our time.
