Nothing wrong with the X5 at all and can't go wrong with AW. I had a topaz blue 4.4 with sport package and 19s... drove the piss out of it. Actually drove it like I was driving my M3 and it handled if that tells you anything about the X5.
Personally, I think the 4.8 is overkill when you can just buy the body parts to get that look. Love how an X5 looks in LeMan Blue though... and that was only with 4.8s. IMO, the X5M is also a tad overkill. Overall though, big fan of the X5.

N54, and I'm pretty sure they do now. Came with the rebadging changes I think... the whole X5, 3.5xdrive I believe is the model. It's been a while, but you can find a plethora of information on Xoutpost.com (formerly X5world.com until BMW USA threatened a lawsuit against them cause of the brand name thing).
My hopes are that our next vehicle will be either an X5 or 535/540 touring when LilBit blesses me with a lil bambino (and that we still keep her 335 and my M3 :shifty)

Why do you want a "suv" with no trunk space, minimal rear leg room and so expensive you don't want to put a ski rack on it? What are the smallest wheels you can put on that thing? I would like some sidewall on my winter tires.
Makes no sense to me. I suppose I am utilitarian.

No. Stock bodied 4.8.
Difference is the underside of the front bumper add-on (color matched to body), underside of rear bumper add-on (color matched), black fender flares, running boards, 20" wheels.
The front and rear 4.8 add-ons can usually be had for about $1000 painted, unless prices have gone up. The flares are a different story. Running boards you can get as an option/accessory when buying or pick them up later.

Trunk space doesn't look that much different from the X5. The X5 may have just ever so slightly more room though. I've seen guys put 18" wheels on their Cayennes. The Cayennes also come with roof rack attachments for those who are interested :)

I grew up in Syracuse, and lived in Albany for 6 years. I know what you are dealing with, first-hand. There is no way in hell that thing would be my dd winter vehicle.
Seriously thought, I am curious about the below. If you lived in the south and had to have an SUV, fine, but in upstate ny I don't get it.

You wouldn't catch me owning a X5 in this climate as a winter DD either.
I just think this thing defeats the purpose of an SUV. I would buy a sedan everyday of the week, or get a real deal SUV.

You posted a face-lifted E53, MY2004-07. They came with the 3.0 I6 (same as 330, 530), 4.4 V8 (same as 540i), and 4.8 V8.
Pre face-lift MY2000 - 2004 was the same except the 4.8 was a 4.6.
New model is the E70, MY2007 - present,
E70 facelift comes in 2011. It will have the 3.0TT I6 (35xdrive), 3.0TT diesel, 4.4TT V8 (50xdrive), X5M, PLUS a limited edition 10 year anniversary X5.

I like the cayenne more than the X5, but they're expensive as hell. I was in an x5 recently and it's actually a lot nicer and roomier than I expected. I dont know why, but they always looked tiny from the outside. The x3 I still cant help but hate.

Price wise, for a used X5, you can probably get a used Cayenne S for the same price. For ~$5k more, you can get a Cayenne Turbo :)
I've read about more X5 owners having problems with their cars than Cayenne owners have. The Cayennes have a few major common problems. However, at this point in their life, most of them have probably had it fixed or repaired already. If you're buying a new one (08+), then you probably won't have much to worry about.

You're welcome, and it would make it just fine. That's what a set of 17 or 18 winter wheels/tires are for, and don't go all crazy slamming it like some tuners and enthusiasts do. Would some of the pics posted about make it in a NY winter, nope. Would a relatively stock with winter tread make it... absolutely.

I drive my 4.4 Sport the same as I drive my s2k. The scary part is that the X5 Sport (with the air ride and 19's) feels MORE secure in gradual turns. I still don't get it.

funny the X5 3.oSi probably gets a lot better mileage than that Supra (BTW sick car!!) and 36M Mr Green Boy I hope you drive a Prius with that attitude. Try putting 4 dogs, ski gear, or 500+ lbs of 24 in diameter Maple in the back of your M36. Not gonna happen, just as you'll never make it up the side of Sugarloaf even with studded pointed spikes in RR drive in the winter on our ice polished, snow covered roads. I use'm for what they're built to do.
