when i start my car it tries to die, catches itself and does this several times and finally dies. i'm getting a code 1222. looked for airleaks couldn't find any, cleaned the maf, cleaned the icv, and just replaced the fuel filters. i thought for sure it was the filters, and after replacing them it ran perfectly for about a mintue. just when i thought i had it fixed, it died :mad any suggestions? its a 1994 530.

i was thinking that too, how hard is it to diy? and could it possibly be a bad maf?

1 hour or less. in the trunk, few bolts and it comes out and un clips. fairly easy diy. Just make sure your battery is disconnected and your in a well ventilated area

There is no bolts if you've got a plastic tank as i do. You just unscrew the lid like a jar. A good advise would be to do it with an almost empty tank, otherwise your hand will have a petrol bath, not very pleasant for skin. I did't disconnect the battery and was fine. It's pretty hard to get a spark from that connector if you are not a complete idiot

Considering you have not done a fuel pump before, for safety sake take 5 minutes and disconnect the battery.

You right, safety first. Especially when it comes to fuel. I did't do it just because I was afraid that something wrong might happen to the on-board computer if i do disconnect the battery, not because i was lazy to do it.

you can test the fuel pump by disconnecting the right fuel hose underneath intake manifold and jumping the relay for 20 seconds - it should pump not less than 700 mil of petrol for that amount of time

haha nice, sounds like it may be easier than doing the filters, a lot more $$$ though. i found a pump at bavauto for $300, anyone know if there are any better deals?

alex, i think i'm just gonna go ahead and replace it, the car has 140,xxx on it and i dont think its ever been replaced, might as well get it done but as always i appreciate the tip

My fuel pump was running fine for 350000 kilometers, the only reason it failed was because i was running with low petrol almost always. This is the best way to kill the FP, as you will find out yourself once you'll get to the tank. I bough a second hand assembly with fuel level sending unit for 100 bucks.

You don't know the quality - that is very true. Nor you know how long will a second hand one last. At least, the second hand one is 100% geniune, and it's a complete assembly, and the ebay ones are just the pumps itself.
I always wonder, WHY WHY would a person (not a junkyard) sell a GOOD WORKING fuel pump??? Can someone educate me?
