View Full Version : How do you stop yourself?

So the last few days I've spent far too much time on Craigslist.
With the nice weather a lot of E34s have appeared. Many for <$4000. How do you stop yourself from wanting to buy them all? Some of them look very nice indeed. I have two, I have no rational reason to want any more, nor do I need any more (unless a Hellrot M5 appears that I like the history on...).
Am I the only one with this illness?

Yeah, I would love to pick up a few more casually but I am inhibited by the fact that they cost money and I have no money =p

In Australia i picked up my first 535i for the price of $1500 ($1200 US) - only main issue being headgasket failure $1000 repair, but that includes, rebuilt head, all parts, new hoses and lines, and a full service by myself, all fluids, yet to get it registered, but it needed two new tyres to pass,
So instead of just doing that, i purchased another 535i for $1000 for parts (its had a hit in the front D/S and bent the control arm (passenger side for you guys) but it has 17" and a few other parts i can use to get my other one, which will be mint now once its on the road, plus i will have a whole running car for spares - sadly both are Auto's :(
Both came off Ebay
Next step will be to source all the parts for a manual conversion
Oh, and i never actually planned on buying an E34, thought had never crossed my mind, i was searching for a cheap run about on ebay when i noticed the first BMW on there
Needless to say, for the money i have paid so far all up (around $4000) i have two E34's, one with 185,000kms with a recon'd cyl head on a good condition block, with a great driveline - as far as i can tell, along with immaculate paint and interior to match
and another complete running E34 that i can salvage for parts, that is immaculate too for a car that has 400,000kms (apart from crash), might even straighten the front out and replace the bent control arm, so i can drive it around easily

Apparently not since I peaked at 15 examples last year. That's when I finally agreed with my wife that I simply had too many cars.

I forget about it, then I stop studying at 3 a.m. and it hits...hard. I'm still trying to get that '95 525i/5 for cheap.
To give you an idea, I've been drinking a little tonight. I bought an M3 4-spoke since I always wanted one. Then I realized it didn't have an airbag. No biggie. I just went on Ebay and bought another one :rofl
Then we'll retrofit Mac's or Nic's '94 non-M airbag onto the crappier M3 wheel and VOILA! Instant win and $260 down the drain :rofl

I haven't caught the E34 bug yet. We'll see how this first one treats me over the next few months. It is a fun (but big ) car to drive though. The manual trans has a good feel to it, and that big six is an awesome engine.

Those E34s look like they could turn into $7000 cars pretty quickly.

I have that exact same feeling also, No money though, i just picked up my first 5 series car, a 94 540i w/ 120,000 miles for $1500 last month, needed O2s and front struts. Ive already been offered $5000 for it from my BMW tech. Now i am thinking sell it and find a 6 speed car. But i am torn!:confused

Hey mate,
Would you be interested in selling some parts of that damaged 535?
You've got a PM.

+1 more of the parts section and less of the cars and trucks section. However, now that it's been mentioned, I haven't gone and looked for today, so now I shall do that ;)

Luckily I have an understanding wife that doesn't stop me. She bought me the diff that I recently installed but didn't even need :stickoutt. Now I'm looking into either a ltw flwheel conversion or SS brake line kit as my next mod. My car has it pretty good considering that I'm a married, full-time student with a kid :D. If you find a way to stop this let me know, but I'm not sure that I'd even want to.

I wish you best of luck in sourcing all the parts for manual conversion in australia. I was looking for a second hand driveshaft for two months, and ended up by fully rebuilding my one at a cost of 1000 AUD.

Be careful what you wish for. I have two E34s one E39 and one E38 ......Plus the remains of two E34 parts cars.
In Michigan it costs 150-180 to plate the cars then I have to keep switching the insurance to the one I drive while keeping comprehensive on all of them. I get around the plate issue by transferring plates from my truck but its not fun to go to the DMV six times a year to save three hundred bucks.
But getting back to your comment yes I have the disease. Now is anyone tempted to off the car for the gas guzzler voucher buy back of 4500?

I currently have $138 in my checking account. That, and, ever seen the Oxygen show Snapped? If I started parking beat bimmers in the yard my mom would end up on that show.
so, broke+fear= my anti-drug.
