Annual Central Cal event adds BMW panache to Monterey

If youve been to the Monterey Historics, you know its an expensive weekend. But the Central Cal Chapter (http://www.cccbmwcca.org/BMW/Welcome.html) has one of the best shows in town for BMW fanatics, and its free to members: the BMW CCA West Coast Concours.

Free to observers, that is; if you want to enter your car in the judging, the $50 entry fee still applies.

You may not see as many Z8s as they had at the Quail last year, but the West Coast Concours at Rancho Caada features free admission. (Andrew MacPherson photo)But for the rest of us, its a great chance to hang out and ogle some of the most beautiful BMWs in the country, new and old. And this years setting, Rancho Caada Golf Club, (http://www.ranchocanada.com/sites/courses/view.asp?id=281&page=5686)will make you feel like one of the high rollers strolling around Pebble Beach.

Long affiliated with Concorso Italiano, the Central Cal event has attracted an amazing array of cars over the years, and the chapter felt that this was a good time to concentrate on presenting an all-BMW display. Competition is fierce in what was once called the Ultimate Clean-Car Contestand those of us who are not addicted to the anal-retentive joys of absolute dust-free perfection are nevertheless impressed by the work of those who are.

Especially when gawking is free.

For vintage-racing fans, the weekend continues as the Golden Gate Chapter hosts a corral above Laguna Secas Turn Five, where you can enjoy a nice lunch while you watch the vintage races. You can even procure your Laguna Seca admission tickets through the Festorics site: click here (http://www.festorics.org/festorics2009/index.html).

As for me, Im confining my Monterey adventure to the lawns of Rancho Caada. Free admission is always my first criterion, and a chance to poke fun at the Q-Tip Brigade is always priceless. Since they are so tired from cleaning and polishing their cars for days on end, I can usually outrun them if they take offense.Satch Carlson
