Hi I was removing the AC Compressor from my 525i today and I could not get that damn 32 mm off, so I thought I had a great idea:stickoutt, but in the end it was not. I got the wrenth on the nut and took out the head lights and then I tied a rope to the wrench. I then tied that rope to the hitch on my 528e. I then started up the car and pulled forward slowly.
Well the damn nut did not loosen. The whole damn thing just broke. I could not believe how tight it was on there. So that is one way that I would suggest not taking an AC compressor
:lol:lol BAD IDEA

What nut, on the fan clutch?

I was about to ask the same thing. A 32mm nut on the compressor?
:confused
What kind of wrench did you use and on what nut? Im having a hard time imagining how you got a nut to break rather than just stripping the threads unless it was a flare nut wrench but I would imagine that it would grab on to the nut and bring all of the a/c lines with it breaking all sorts of things on the way.

Well I had tried to get it off with just pulling and pushing, but after an hour of that and then using a hammer to hit the damn wrench I just did not have any other idea. So being a little pissed I thought I could add a lot of force and get this done very quickly, well in the end it mad it a very bad job turn worse. So do not try this at home.
Andy
Do you have any pictures of the damaged nut?

Ever hear of liquid wrench???
Or a torch?
I can't believe you TOOK OUT THE HEADLIGHTS to do this.

What 32mm nut are you referring to? The fan clutch maybe? You do know it's left hand thread right?
And back in the old days, if we had a stuck bolt on a pulley on the motor we'd stick the wrench on it and a section of pipe that extended down to the ground. Make sure the wrench is wedged against or close to the ground and give the starter a quick bump. Instant impact wrench. Worked every time.

I do something like that.......stick a long piece of EMT on the end of a wrench and you've got an instant breaker bar. However that is a last resort. ;)

You do know the fan clutch is left hand threading? Which means if you were pushing/pulling towards the passenger side, you were tightening it.

if you can't remove fan clutch, remove the wp pulley (4 x 10mm bolts), Undo the belt, slide pulley and remove another 4 10mm bolts that hold the water pump to the block. After that pull whole assembly out. Good luck!

You cannot remove the wp pulley with the fan clutch in place, fwi. Make a tool to hold the water pump in place.

I just did this today, when i replaced water pump :) and i did that 5 times before.
Don't forget to loosen the wp pulley bolts while it's still under belt tension!

Yep. Piece of cake. Although it's easiest to just get a fan clutch wrench and wrench to hold the pump pulley whilst you loosen the clutch. Takes about 3 seconds and minimal effort... ;)

hahah i did. i had removed the mech cooling fan and was able to get it off with a wrench. however seperating the pulley from the clutch and waterpump became a problem lol

After pondering about it over a six pack of beers, the idea seems brilliant.
Lesson learn never try to solve a problem while drinking a six pack of beers.

Thats why you just make a tool and get it off before hand. :stickoutt

I was removing the nut from the big hose on the AC compressor, and there is not a lot of room in there for a big wrench. I did read the Bentley and it told me to unscrew the damn nut well that nut was not coming off. Also there are 2 allans on the sides but they were rounded out by someone else. So by removing the headlights I thought that I coudl stick my arms through and grab the wrench, well I just could not get enough force to move the damn thing. So after screwing with this damn nut I decided to tie a rope to it and just pull on it, this way I could use my whole body to pull. I still got no where. So i used my car and it broke the hose off of the Compressor. I tried many things before this but I had to get it off sice the engine is coming out. So did anyone learn anything from this. Now if it had work I would have been saying YES I GOT YOU, but instead the car won.

Lol, you do know you didn't need to disconnect it to get the motor out I hope. Just pull the two bolts holding it to the bracket and hang if off to the side with everything still connected...

No it had to go, since the whole car will be going sooner or later.

Time to buy bolt extractor tools and very long ratchet extensions, I used on my compressor over 2 feet long. That way hose unbolts very easy. Good luck!

OK, but I have never had this kind of trouble with a AC nut, I have removed a lot of them and this was a first.

Hey, live and learn. I give you props for working on it yourself instead of saying f'it and taking it to a shop.

Shit, taking it to the shop? I just replaced my main bearings, I would not taking it to the shop for a job like this. I only take it to the shop if it is electrical or it is something like replacing the timing belt and I just do not have the time.

Like a recoil starter??
I know it isn't nice to laugh at other's misfortune but this is too funny not to.
Good thing the ignition wasn't on.
