BMW Migration?

I found one of your fliers at the Colt State Park meetup a couple weeks ago. Let me give you some advice, and PLEASE take it.

There's not a lot more annoying in this universe than finding crap fliers stuck under your windshield wipers, like after you go to the club and all the party promotors have littered the hell out of your car, except maybe for one thing.

That one thing would be when the fliers look like shit, and yet they still look a million times better than the website they direct you to. It's been two weeks, and I just checked it again, why haven't you even touched it? I mean I can understand if you aren't a web guy, but if you're going to spam PHYSICALLY, then you really need to back it up.

Second of all, your fliers look like they're promoting a club where the only thing preventing me from getting hepatitis from the drinks glasses in the club is the watered down alcohol they pour in it, and if I decide to leave before 10pm I'm just as likely to get shot by an employee as I am by one of the patrons. Not the type of event I really want to bring not only my car to, but my friends, family, and bodily organs to also.

Let me sum it up, as I've known a lot of promotors over the years. Get a flashy car. Believe it or not it attracts attention. Don't get a flashy car that's out of line with the type of crowd you're trying to attract. An x5 on like 28 inch wheels or e60 with graphics aren't going to draw out the same crowd as a swapped e30 or clean e36. Spend more on your car than on your clothes.

Second, update your fliers so they more clearly represent what it is you're promoting. If it's a Bmw meetup site, make it more obvious. Just having "BMW Migration" on it with "generic blurry rainbow backround #7" makes it look like you're trying to promote a shitty bar in Lawrence or Cranston that holds like 20 people and is going to be blasting latin top 40 music. Spend more on your flier than on your haircut.

Get your awful website together. You're using the first two things to drive traffic to the site, it shouldn't be so annoying and slapped together that just looking at it makes me turn away from it. If you want an example of how a website should and should not be done, look at netflix.com and blockbuster.com, it's a classic case of do/do not. Netflix is simple, easy to figure out, and fairly clean so that when you first see the page you can figure out how to do everything in very few steps. Blockbuster is the opposite. Guess who's killing who in that business?

Someone said to me a long time ago (and it's true) that a website is about promoting your product, not showing off your ability to build a website. Nobody wants to see how good you are with HTML, or Flash, or really any of that. They want to use the site, they want it to be easy to navigate, and they don't want annoying ads everywhere. You don't have any of that. Your site is obviously a template you've filled in, and badly, and (I don't know if you've ever even seen your site) it's really annoying to use. If you want any tips or pointers *BELIEVE* me, I'm more than happy to help, I'd love to have another meetup site specifically for BMWs, I think it could be a great resource and a lot of fun, but the way it is now looks like you spent more on your laptop than you did on your website.

I really don't think I'm bashing you just for the sake of being a douche, or a hater, or whatever because I'm not. I genuinely think you've got a decent idea with an absolutely terribly execution. Do it over and you might just have something special. I mean it about helping too.

A few more points that I'd like to add... I don't know if you're doing this as a profit-taking venture, but if you are you're going to need sponsors and vendors. Nobody reputable will touch you for advertising on that site the way it looks. I don't understand what your plan is, because you're obviously not going for banner ad sales (which you should), so all I can think is that you're eventually going to try to put on your own shows and charge admission, but you'll need to polish your act up for that too.

What's the deal here man?

So that's the way you're going to play it? I don't know if you're one dude with three accounts, or three dudes that all share the same brain, but there's no way anyone actually likes that website and will honestly admit to it. It's a template that's OBVIOUSLY lifted from some free flash template site.

So far as my post count goes, what can I say? This is a hobby and I like helping people out. I'm an independent mechanic that got into bimmers because I bought one and made friends with some fellow enthusiasts. It snowballed from there. I currently own 2, with one more on the way and an old caddy too.

Pardon me for pointing out that if it weren't for the fact that you've got that flash template on there your site would look like it was from Geocities in 1996. It's *REALLY* bad. I can't understand how you can even try to promote whatever the hell it is you're trying to promote with a site like that. It's embarrassing, it's sad, and it's a major turnoff. If I want to get to the forums (which ought to be a major selling point of the whole thing) I have to first select the flash enabled site, then click on forums, then follow the link on the left to the forums. The whole point of the thing is to make it easy to get to the stuff you want to use, but you go out of your way to put roadblocks in front of you.

Let me sum YOU up here. You're knocking me for giving you constructive criticism. I'm trying to help you, and you're giving me shit about it. I'm the guy that you should be directly trying to please. You see my post count and think I'm wasting my time, rather than thinking "That guy's all over this place, trying to help, maybe I should get him on my site." Who exactly are you trying to convince to join your sad little party if it's not enthusiasts?

Seriously, I'm looking at your site now and your "CEO" has a yahoo email address. Your "Web" guy has a gmail address, you have an email address at your own domain. Why don't all three of you have your own email addresses at your domain? All that's missing is an AOL address and some free CDs and it'll be 1998 all over again.

The fact that I "Took so long" to write this (which considering I know how to write, it didn't take all that long, trust me) and it's all about trying to get you to help yourself, you should take that under consideration that perhaps it's something you should pay attention to. I think the thing about the length of the post isn't that it took me so long to write it, it's that you took so long to read it, but I'd be just as surprised to find out you actually read it as I would to find out that you read it in less than 45 minutes.

Just out of curiosity, what makes you think I don't have a girl? I actually live with my girl, and she's kinda the most awesome chick I've ever met. She does nice things for me all the time, and all she wants back is for me to love her. How can I say no to that? I try to be the best guy I can and do nice things for her.

Just out of curiosity, why is it that on Turner's site there's nothing about your meetup? I'd figure they'd be advertising the hell out of it, the only place I can find anything anywhere is where you've posted it. Why is that? Turner usually likes good media attention, and on their site it says they're racing and it's going to be on the Speed channel. Is anyone going to be home for this tour?

Also the Dragway is showing a Test Session on the 25th. Starts at 8am, says nothing about your event. From the way you showed up at the CSP event a couple weeks ago it seems like you're trying to glom your name all over other people's events. In other words, show up and take all the credit for the hard work that other people have put in.

http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e214/illustriousbahamut/mele46.jpg

Need I say more? I don't think you're going to find much of an audience for that sort of thing around here, but good luck anyway. Like I said, if you want advice on how to lay your site out just let me know. I *REALLY* mean it when I say I'll help you. You've got a decent idea, but you're going to just end up with your foot in your c**t if you keep going the way you're going.
