Hello, I have a 2001 530i Manual Transmission, with 101K miles on it. Recently I've noticed that a strange sound comes on when I put my car in gears. I can't hear it going to 3rd and up becauseu the sound is not loud enough and the road noise increases. I can hear it if I place the in reverse, or 1st gear. Also if I try to get it moving from 2nd, I hear the same noise. The noise is similar if you put some quarters in a jar, and shake them, thats the noise I hear. I've also tried pressing the clutch all the way down, putting the car into 1st gear, and slowly let it go. As the car catches and starts moving forward at 1 mph, I hear the sound for few seconds and it goes away, then back when I switch into the 2nd gear for a second.

I was hoping to see if anyone else experience similar issues and can advice on what this can be? How expensive to repair this? Is it possible to do it myself?

Thanks in advance for reading and your advice.

so it's like a chatter?

it could be your throw out bearing.

it's possible to do yourself if you are pretty mechanically inclined, it's a part that is replaced when you replace your clutch... so it might be time to look into that as well.
