The fan clutch on my 525i has become lazy. Its a Behr with 10k miles on it. The AUX fan kicks on before the clutch is engaged and while the AUX fan is running I can stop the main fan with my fingers without any effort. Anyone ever had this before? Is it possible the metal strip needs to be slightly bent outward so it can sense heat a lot better? Or should I see if I can get it replaced as a defective unit?

The fan is bad, you need to replace it. The clutch in the fan no longer works. You need either a 32 open end or a 1 14 inch open. BMW also makes a special tool to take it off. Make sure when you take it off that you remember that it is reverse thread.

:werd:^^ You don't need to go through BMW to get the special tool, I ordered one through Pelican parts and it arrived in two days.

Yes I am aware of the sizing and threading. I already have removed it many times and made the tool myself. I just remember reading somewhere that the little metal strip just needs to be bent out.

You don't need the special tool either, just a skinny 32mm wrench from a bicycle shop. I paid $8 for mine IIRC, it works great.

I think I spent $20 all together on my tools. Anyway, back on topic. The clutch is 10k miles old, replaced it last summer. This sucks if I need a new one already.

Maybe you got a one year warenty with it??

Call your supplier if you still have the invoice.
Worst they will tell you is no.

Ihad 2 Behr's go bad one me, 1 directly out of the box, the other about 1 year, and that's with barely driving the thing as I've been at school at the e34 stays home in the garage. They are total pieces of shit.

Well it looks like I'll be ordering a Sachs. At least Behr radiators aren't total crap.
