Hi Everyone,

Well after 60 days of moving 4000 miles, setting up at the new house and picking up the cars I bought over the net I am now sitting with two E34s in the driveway.

I've got the 1995 540i in Oxford/Beige with 140K miles on it. My wife has the 1992 525i in Kashmir/Beige with 87K miles on it. Both cars are auto boxes.

The 525 is a one owner, always dealer serviced car that (and I know this is thrown around a lot on the forums but...) drives like new. And I mean it. The previous owner was fanatical and I have the entire service history from the day he bought it, all the keys, manuals, everything. When you climb in you think wow, this thing can't be more than a few years old.

And the engine in the 525i. Smooth and creamy. I had read extensively that the 525i was a bit short in the power department. Driving both cars back to back every day I'd have to say I prefer the 525i. It's ideal as a family car in a suburban setting. It works great for short runs and it cruises effortlessly on the freeway.

I wanted to thank everyone who helped me prep the PPI form in my sig. It meant we purchased two excellent cars, sight unseen. The 540i is a bit more worn than the 525, as you might imagine given the difference in mileage. Mechanically it is still excellent and the entire front end and brakes were recently down, but the paint is about 7/10, with some of the clearcoat off around the edge of the windshield.

I seem to have a very mild rock in the seats when launching from a stop or stopping short, it strikes me as probably a loose bolt on the seat frame at the base. Has anyone else experienced this?

The only other thing that is mildly annoying on the 540i is that the car sat for a bit while I was moving and the rear window regulators have a tendency to stick. I tap on the door panel while operating the window switch frees them up and they work for a day or so and then stick again. Is there a way to lubricate them to stop this from happening?

Also, the 525i has a second cigarette lighter in the center console in the back, which is great for the kid's DVD player, but the 540i doesn't have it. Is that a common feature?

One of the factory remotes for the door locks is dead on the 525i (it lights up and I've tried swapping chips with the working remote and it still doesn't work). It's the square three button unit, looking very vintage mid-90's. Are these still available?

Loving the cars and I have full manuals for both so it anyone needs anything looked up, I can help. I also have things like the laminated one page OBC operation card etc that I will scan and post when I get a chance.

The best part of the 525i purchase (which was from the local dealer that sold it new) was that the senior sales rep who sold the car new was still with the dealership, loves the E34 and spent over a half an hour giving me the full tutorial they used to give on delivery back in the day. He went through OBC operation, lots of little features and facts about the cars. It was a great experience, especially for such an old car.

I'll try and get some picks up soon. I spent a few hours yesterday doing a Mother's three stage on the hood and trunk with a Mother's Powerball 4Paint, but I ran out of battery power along the way so I need to do the rest of the 540i on the next dry day.

Did you move from or to Vancouver? I'm located in the Metro-Van area myself.

My E34 also has the lighter in the back. Our E32 also has it in the back. For some reason, neither of the lighters work in the E32.

Wow, you don't meet too many knowledgeable car salesmen. From personal experience, I'd prefer to never deal with a stealership again, but good on you for finding a good one and purchasing a mint E34 from them.

Anyways, congrats on the cars, and if anyone else is looking for an E34 in great shape..talk to me.;)

;)

To Vancouver after 6 years in the Caribbean.

The 525i came from Parkshore. The sales guy was right in to it, even recalling that there is 22 lbs of paint on an E34. :)

I've seen your 535i on CL. Any suggestions on where I can get an affordable set of steelies to put snows on my cars?

Just checked out your PPI form, simply incredible work man! I'm sure many people in the future will appreciate that!

Congrats on the purchases. The 525 sounds pretty sweet.

Seats are anchored by 2 bolts in the rear and slotted tabs in front. Take a look at all 4 corners and I will bet you'll find the culprit.

The remotes are still available new for around $85.

I have a set of the stock E34 wheels - http://static.howstuffworks.com/gif/autoreview/400x266/1990-96-BMW-5-Series-93602061990204.jpg

They are wrapped in winter tires with good tread. I think they are a more stylish alternative to steelies, and since I don't drive my E34 in the winter I can sell them if anyone is interested.

Sorry, just read your problems. White lithium grease on the window tracks. Cig lighters went out with the 91ish cars as another way to save money. Just like map lights in 89s. Buy one and put it on, should be 15-25. Steve has one right now I believe.

Jeff,

I just had the same remote issue the other day. Found the 2nd original remote in a box and got it a new battery. I synch'd the chip with the control under the rear seat (ty DIY section, was easy to do) but now i get 3 honks when i unlock but no lock response and no honks or response from the lock button or panic button. The system worked fine about 8 months ago before i lost the other remote I had.

Anyone know if the wiring harness that runs to the trunk has anything to do with this? I have about half of the wires split at the hinge point(fixing soon and I'll post some pics since I didnt see any on Attack Eagles threat for the touring). I'm no wiz with the wiring diagrams yet but could probably disipher them if i really sit down with them.

Anyone have similar issues with the stock BMW/Alpine keyless entry system responding like this even after synching remotes?

The trunk lock might be affecting it. If you have broken wires, patch them back together and then go from there. No need for a wiring diagram.

1: cable slack most likely (if it is self fixable and not worn out pivot points). Try trimming and reseating the cables (seat seat twist instructions)
2: FAR easier (and generally nicer looking) to buy the console plate from the dealer ($12) and a powerport/lighter element from chain store ($6), then wire direct to battery thru a 15 amp fuse so you can leave the portable(s) to charge when needed. (<$20 for everything)

I found one that looks like OEM, but is not a POS on the reverse side and doesn't require the original connector like the oems. And isn;t corroded up like a used piece. I actually had an OEM unit and decided NOT to use it.

I thought about just using a power port version with the black plastic Cover so there was no possibility of anyone pressing a lighter in... something to consider.

3: Keylessrides.com has the originals (for more than a new alarm) or some that look different but work (for about $60 each).
I had a brainbox but lost the remote somewhere between the Airport/PO's house, and arriving Home with the car the first day. I wound up buying and installing a better alarm for less money than the cost of one OEM alarm remote.
(actually considering I sold the alarm, alarm harness, and alarm console plate for $45, for less than the cost of one aftermarket remote)
The Alpines suck, honestly. Just throwing good money after bad.

Your best bet is to go to your local bmw dealership and they should code your radio for you.
