What's the difference?

No difference except the power output.

M20 made 20 hp

M50 made 50 hp.

M20= 6 cylinder 12 V SOHC belt driven engine
M50= 6 cylinder 24 V DOHC chain driven engine

No difference except the power output.

M20 made 20 hp

M50 made 50 hp.

Oh ok - wow those figures sound low. But, these engines aren't designed for super crazy horsepower.

haha..still not sure, tried googling.
its 8 cylinders though, and what does m20, m30 or m50 even mean?

mikemxbike4

Its hard to say since 1994 US 540i came with m20 stock and m30 as an option.

Its probably m30 sport edition then. They added 2 cylinders for extra perfomance. Very rare version.

These guys are just messing with you! You have a 540 which is an M60B40, as opposed to the M60B30 in the 530's. The M60 designation is just an engine code, whilst the B40 refers to the 4.0 liters of displacement. Hope this helps

haha you guys are mean :stickoutt
to the OP: take a look at Stir Fry A Lot's post. since your car is a 1990, it's most likely an m20, the first motor pictured.
and to bodega: dude, i just google'd all of the BMW motors available in the e34, and each and every time the first choice was the wikipedia article with a full explanation of the specifics of the motor, along with it's applications by BMW. FYI, you have an M60B40. Just type in BMW M60 in google, your problems will be solved.

Damn :rolleyes

Haha yup welcome to the board!

BMW has designated index for all of their motors.

US E34's came with m20 m30 s38 m50 and m60 index motors.

So since mine is a M 5 does that mean I got the m20, m30 or the more rare M42?

I think they came with the almighty M10, since they wanted to make the car twice as fast as advertised.

Now I 'm really confused. I know I have a 6L M60-but is it the I8 or v6- I also have an m30-and just need to figure out how to combine them to make an m90

Its a V6 only the Alpina Bi-turbo got the I8. The M30 should be the 3L V6 so if you just bolt the cranks together (remove the harmonic dampner and bolt straight to the flywheel) you should be able to make a pretty reliable 9L V12. Good luck man!

On a serious note. I'm no engine expert but I belive that one main difference between the M20 and the M50 is that the latter had hydrolic lifters?

No damnit! M50 is the one with electronic solenoids that open the valves. Duh

M5 came with M10 twin supercharged. Unless you have Autobahn edition which has M42 with a Patented Honda Vtec system.
