I have 217k on my motor and my 2nd gear doesn't work..but it still drives perfect 1st to 3rd and the motor is very sound, all well kept..its not worrying me right now..

I would like to however fix the 2nd gear thing, but at the same time im thinking just wait till the motor goes and do it all at the same time something fresh/

So i want to either swap the motor or rebuild and turbo..

Ideas thoughts opinions..obviously i'm looking into having a pretty quick ride, but i dont think more than 2-3,000 is going to be spent on it..ill do most if not all the work myself, help of some friends ofcourse too

So put yourself in my shoes and keep the price range in mind..lets see who can come up with the best idea yah? haha

2nd gear not working is the syncro , you need a new tranny. as for a turbo build , you are going to spend more than 2-3k , 2-3k is just for the turbo kit not to mention a tune , thicker head gasket the list just keeps growing. sure you can go FI on stock internals but eventually you will want more power and its just better to do it right the first time.

I know I should probably just save up and buy a quicker car but I would like to just make the one I have now faster....

95 525i auto

what would you guys recommend that I can do to my baby??
I can easily go out and get a turbo for it but what else would I need or have to do to make it all work?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

2-3K for a quick car??

Buy a Honda Civic EF or EG hatch for as cheap as you can find and strip out as much unnecessary stuff as possible, rip the old single cam out, build this motor(http://www.honda-tech.com/showthread.php?t=1046336) and call it a day.:devillook

You like the stock headlights better?

smoked stock headlights ftw.
the angel eyes were developed for later model bmws to accentuate the two headlight reflectors in the single headlight. You don't need to accent two headlight reflectors in two headlights.

source another engine and gearbox, and swap them over, and then rebuild yours to the specs that you want, then fit them once all done and resell the motor and box you initially bought to recoup costs

and that way you will still have your original engine numbers at the end, and as long as you want to build the motor/gearbox to how you want

Yeah not much love for angel eyes on this forum. HID's in projector housings or better yet smiley's + HID's, but angel eyes not so much.

Good idea. That will also give you time to source the funds to do what you want as $2-3k is seed money... it's going to take a bit more than that to do it right.

Replace the second gear syncro and go onto the forced induction forum on here and look up 'turbo setup for $1000'. A guy there did an E36 325i M50 engine for about $1000 and he tells you exactly what to get, etc etc etc. It's a really good thread. You can't run a pile of boost but enough to make the car a lot more fun and responsive. If you can do your own tranny and turbo work then you should be able to stay within your budget.

To start off, the m50 engine probably won't pop any time soon, so waiting for it is not a good idea. Second, ignoring a problem while waiting for another one to show up means you're not caring for your car. Get a good used, working tranny and swap it in. Put a new clutch in, swap to a good single mass unit that can take more power. Rebuild your shifter while you're in there. If you have dreams of a turbo you'll need a better clutch anyway.

Your car loves you, love it back.

I do take care of my car, good care of it. just because 2nd gear doesn't work and i haven't fixed it yet does not mean im neglecting it.theres no issue to me driving it like it is,i just cant find a tranny for it or when i do locate one i dont have the funds at the time for it,moneys tight not..not so much in a few months.

This thread kinda went a completely differnt direction than i was expecting but its ok
