Hmmm redid the whole intake. Used sheet metal got a new filter a off road use only free flow one and yea its cool. I had to pop rivet the sheet metal to fit the intake perfectly and its working great. I have to buy new stock box off i hope oem direct place cause mine is cracked in half.

Is the top lexan too, or is it open and fit to the hood? Hard to tell from the photo. But glad to see its got a proper heat shield now. Done anything with taking the headlight out?

that Spectre Filter is probably robbing more power than what you had stock. evem with a shield. id say find a proper setup, or at least not an autozone $40 filter. maybe a K7n slip on or something? :dunno

If its only for the sound then why not just keep the stock box and duct some intake noise into the cabin like the M54 powered Z4s did, heck I'm sure you can even use a lot of the Z4 components to seal the system. http://www.realoem.com/bmw/partgrp.do?model=BT53&mospid=47799&hg=13&fg=20 ? That way no loss of power and you still get the sound, most likely even better than your cone filter setup. Just a thought, I do like that your trying things but be careful especially if thats an oiled filter element.

I've been doing a lot of measurements on the M5 air intake system and it doesn't have many areas to improve on, among the ones that can be improved are heat rejection and intake pickup points. Once I'm done compiling all of my data I should have a more complete picture of what works and what doesn't with numbers for those who want them.

A good example of the heat the M5 is fighting off, after driving hard for an 20 minutes the external airbox temp on a 91F day at 6105ft elevation was 156F and the plenum was at 168F so trust me your plexy shield isnt much of a match compared to the OEM setup in terms of heat rejection. Internal temps differ (they are lower, Im still collecting my data range) due to boundary layers and other factors but still the external temps have a direct influence on the internal temp gains.

Again I applaud you for trying new things but if your just after sound there are better more proven ways of doing it that wont hurt longevity or power output. Good luck either way man.

nope im not scared. I got bored and tried it out, yea I have the stock box and I decided to see what happens. I can tell difference when the lexan poly-u was not boxed was a difference. Also for heat i have a meter and i going to see how much heat is going in and out. I am going to probably get the K&N filter or another filter i found on bmw site i believe its kind of like a foam. Well its fitted all the way around just not the side on the left near the steering fluid. I mean i dont race or anything out right so i don't really care to much. It will be taken out August when I get around to buying the Supercharger or Turbo. I am just waiting for the move to LA so I know how much funds can be dumped in. I covered the backing of it and so yea. If i could dyno to do a test then that be fine. I mean i hear all kinds of people say stock is best which i don't agree or disagree, but wheres the dyno sheets or proven big loss? If got dyno sheets pass them along over here.

that looks like crap

lol well thanks i like to think i can do it hahaha :lol

I am gonna try without the headlight but haven't gotten around to it. I am gonna try find dyno see with and without the headlight possibly.

I just wrapped my maf with that stuff the other day. I don't have any temp results but it does seem to be keeping the heat away. I'll get pics up in a lil bit.

i guess the people that hand built the car were just stupid and wanted us to change there intake that they designed on a piece of shit computer. and slaved for hours to make the least restrictive design.

sure wish i could itb my M30 and go maf less :)

It saddens me to see that you have an m5.... for all of you out there wondering why people who dont know whats up say " you cant afford a real BMW" (even if it is a e60) this is why, because people go buy redneck parts from autozone and put them on a wonderful handcrafted machine and make it look like a run of the mill POS. basically in my opinion that car deserves a better owner. IMO im glad you want to upgrade your car but at least do it right AT the MINIMUM do a K&N if you are going to do an intake. Put the original back in with a panel k&n and just accept the fact that upgrading these cars cost more than a honda hahaha most of us have been down this road of denial b4

Tell you truth I don't think Red Necks and seems your little racist haha, but yea please get your facts straight they didn't make the filter. I don't really care too much. :redspot Oh yea did a temperature reading and engine is about 150 degrees and Intake is about 129 Degrees I drove for about 30-45 minutes from here to a friends. Yea I know I have the stock Intake box with K&N filter in it. Im not to worried about it. I will probably put the stock back in a few days after few more tests for observation. Even if i lose HP I am not too worried about it, I don't bang in my car for the most part. I mean come on you drive a 1990 5 series not M5 if you put it in your car you prob lose everything and still be slow. I am not hurting my car at all just never had intake in a car of mine and looked around so really I dc because Water and Dirt can't get in there so its not gonna clogg and dirty up the filter. :eyecrazy

So let me get this straight since your a High Tech engineer you know 100% sure tested yourself and everything huh, I think not.

Basically what everyone is saying is the same old story. It's quite obvious the factory intake was designed to take in the coldest air as well as to not be restrictive. It has been proven over and over that your Pepboys intake system does absolutely nothing to increase power, and can even do damage to intake components by using an oiled filter.

It's your car, and you can do what you want... but what kind of responses did you expect when you're showing pictures of an intake that looks worse and sucks in hotter air then the one engineering experts at BMW's Motorsport division designed?

Guess it goes well with your "demon eyes." Most of us are purists and prefer that a handbuilt masterpiece deserves better treatment than a bunch of Pimp my Ride parts.

He's 16 too. I still have a bet with myself that the S38 and other parts will be available within the next year.

I think an IQ test should be given before rare cars change hands.

Dude good luck in your quest for power at kragon.

No reason to flame what your trying to do is a great idea and while I dont know the specs on your wrap Im sure it does a decent job. Keep up the work and try and get some before and after temp readings if you possibly can.

Its rated to resist radiant temps up to 2000f. Sadly I didn't take any before temp readings but even after a quick jog around town the MAF housing would be extremely hot to the touch. Before I wrapped it I'm certain some of that heat must have made its way through. When I touch it now the heat definitely feels diffused. The wrap was only $20 so I figured it couldn't hurt to do it. I did it more for shits, giggles and a little piece of mind. Would the temp readings from a scanner be sufficient? I was just gonna take it on a run and then take off the boot from the airbox and stick my hand in there to see if there was any radiant heat inside, lol. I'll try and get some hard numbers though, just let me know what the best method would be.
