Car has been sitting for two months while working on other stuff. Took it for a test drive yesterday and noticed an unusual burning smell. Front wheel rim was hot a firecracker. It was hard to turn the wheel up on the jack as well. I haven't had a chance to start messing with it, but is this something that just needs to be broke loose or is it just time for a new caliper. Hate to buy a new one if I don't have to. Any suggestions??

Check first if the caliper still moves on the slides. If the piston is sticking in the bore junk the caliper.
With as much heat as you describe the rotor stands a good chance of being warped now too.

Posting follow up - turns out the rubber boot around the cylinder was off and cylinder got rusted in Western NY salty winters.....not bad for 228k on originals (actually one side still OK)......car never saw snow.......why did I move north??????

is the brake fluid dirty as hell? maybe the caliper is seized. buy a pair of used ones because oem ones are of better quality and are galvanized compared to todays aftermarket replacement.
