I personally dont own a e34 but im doing sidework on one and am running into some problems, and its kicking my ass for lack of better words. Buddy of mine has a 1994 525i. Called me and asked me if I would be able to replace the engine harness. This isnt a problem with me ive done them on my cars a couple times. So I swap the harnesses out and try to start it and im getting a crank no start. Check for power at the fuel pump and there is none, check for spark and there is none. Since the original wiring harness burnt up I have reason to believe it may have shorted the ECU out but thats a costy guess. Maybe theres a second problem besides the harness that I dont know about? Bad crank sensor or something? There is also an extra plug going into the electronics box, where the ECU is and such, that I have no idea what its for. It was not on the orginal harness.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Did you happen to replace the harness with harness from a car without EWS?

is the dme a silver or red label? sounds like the harness is pre EWS so there is no EWS connection to the starter immobilization relay .

If thats the prob...swap out the DME for a red label or engine harness

Red label ECU....VAC motorsports said the harness was from the same kind of car

I'd confirm that you've got the proper harness (just pulled from a car a clutch that was improperly installed by that outfit, surprise). If so, find a known working DME? Lots of red labels floating around....

Im having the kid call tomorrow to see A. if its a red label harness and B. see if they are sure its a manual harness because of that extra plug.....i ohmed out the CPS and it was out of range so I picked a used one up. going to try it tomorrow

Well I got the car running today...it was the crankshaft position sensor...guess I just had to stop being lazy and do some diag hah. Only problem with it now, is that it was sitting so long the parking brake is dragging now

check the cables going to rear wheels, I had similar problems, parking brake shoe broke inside the rotor and was dragging and by the time i got to the parking lot my wheel started to burn, luckily i had a water in my car and put it out the fire. Good luck

Will do...I drove the car around and the noise went away...maybe it was just all the rust build up on the rotors haha
