I have a '95 740IL w/ a M60. What year, bell housing is going to mate to my M60? I am approaching 130K and have heard these automatics go about 150K. I am going to start my investigation, while I have time, as to what six speed will work w/ my car. I have heard that the M5 six speed might work? What do you guys think? Thanks in advance.

Any M62, S62, or M60 6-speed manual gearbox will mate. The E34 M5 gearbox will not mate.

Evidently yes. AwesomeIsLuke on the E38 forum said so. He has successfully done the conversion.

The E34 M5 6-box has the same S6S 420G designation as the M6x one, but its bellhousing is different so won't fit*; why they didn't rename it I don't know.

*that said, the one I have from a 98 540i/6 looks to have a removable bellhousing...

I can vouch for this, the UUC DSSR for the M5 6-speed is incompatible with my 540i/6.
