Lately Ive been thinking about turboing my e34. The engine seems sound enough ( at 171k ) and I have turboed an old accord and an old sentra before. It was a fun project and did some serious hp difference or my accord. Just curious on thoughts.

Thoughts? A proper M50 turbo is a BEAST!

The question is: Can YOU build a proper m50 turbo?

Well what I was hoping for was that someone on here has done it already and wanted some feedback... I was going to take a turbo from a saab or volvo, manually turn the boost up to 7-8psi and intercool it. And of course have my local perf shop tune it :)

I'd say go for it. I have a boosted 525i and it is great. It is a pretty hack and slashed together unit that I am slowly cleaning up and going to tune in better but for now it is fun and has a nice kick in the pants compared to a stock m50 engine. My setup fails compared to 5mall5nail but I don't have the capital investment desire to take it to his level (plus I have a biturbo for when I need a rush).

There is a great thread in the forced induction forum where you can build a turbo setup for $1000 on an m50 engine. I am assuming, though, that your car is an m20 engine (based on it being a 1991), so I am unsure of what the cost would be. Not sure how readily available a turbo manifold is for those. Someone else will have to chime in on that one...

Really? $1000? When I see amounts like $5000 it is easy to resist.
