I'm having a horrible time trying to get the engine and tranny to line up.

Installed new clutch it. everything is correct as far as the parts are concerned. the tranny is still in the car. its a 6 speed.

i'm trying to install the engine back in the car however i cannot get it to slip on the transmission shaft. goes in some but there is like a 1-2 inch gap. what gives? 6 of us been tackling this for 7 hours. no go.

Are you using the right alignment tool? I have both a plastic spline tool and the aluminum one that is called for in the miller clutch instructions (the one you are supposed to use with a Self Adjusting Clutch). The one for the SAC holds a much tighter tolerance. It sounds like your clutch plate is just slightly misaligned. That happened to me when I used the plastic alignment tool.

A 1 - 2 inch gap means it's not going through the clutch plate (much less the pilot bearing). Usually it's the pilot bearing that's hard.

Once through the Clutch plate I look from underneath and jack the tranny up/down so that the gap top-bottom between the tranny and the engine is equal top/bottom. Once it's equal I shove. No problem doing it by myself. To make it easy I tried starting a little high (less gap up top) and moving it down slightly (very) and trying again. Once you hit the sweet spot it goes all the way in (assuming that your alignment pins are correct.

Are you sure the hydraulic hose isn't in the way? I found a really bright flashlight to be helpful...

YMMV & Good luck!

+1 to all this.

Follow this advice and keep trying. Anytime I've been an inch away has usually been the pilot bearing, but if the clutch isn't aligned, you won't be going into the bearing straight on anyway.

got it, much coaxing but got it. we raised the car on the hoist, jacked up the tranny abit, jacked the motor a bit and it slipped in like a glove, no point in doing it from the top, bottom was the key. cheers guys! thanks.

Oh wow. Didn't realize you were trying to align the engine with the trans. I always install the tranny instead of the way you were trying.
