Yeah Denton's pic looks most like the snow I bomb around in. The car is actually really good with proper tires as long as you don't get in stuff too deep, which I happened to do quite a bit more last winter with the car being lowered.

Yaa, you're correct it says 'men' on the number plate. That's why later I got new plates. People made jokes about it.
The next number I got was us-style and 'zhu' was written on it. It's almost like 'suhu', what in estonian means 'into the mouth'. People made jokes about it as well. Stupid gay world.

Yeah you would've been in some trouble - the closure pretty much blocked easy access to/from the city. I was out there for work - turned out to be a 14 hour day before getting back to Rochester.
Here's a couple pictures from earlier this afternoon, we've got another 4" or so now and it's supposed to come down pretty steady for the next 36 hours...I live right on the lake so get dumped pretty good with lake effect.

They serve their purpose, but it's a specialty vehicle in need of restoration. In Land Rover terms, it's the equivalent of a 3.8 M5 Touring. Very rare, never brought to the states, and highly desirable.
Either way, let me know if you change you mind...

Why have the studs when they're so short? They can't make a damn bit of difference from what I can see. That said, I'm not a studded type - I like studless snows. I just got my new snows installed on the wheels today. I'll swap them on the car once it decided that it's not spring here. According to the weather, it's going to be unseasonably warm here for about a week. :( I was looking forward to some good snow... been waiting for a good winter for almost 8 years.

Studs grips ice and can't stick out more than 2mm by law. I've had studsless snow tires and they sucked. Don't seem that much but once you tried driving with them you'll see..
Here in sweden there's a big debate about studs or studless.. THe green loons has been lobbying to ban them but the swedish DMV has relased a study showing 42% less chance of an accident on studs than on studless.
I live very far up north as oposed to Miche who'se in the Stockholm area.
Down there you can use studless if you want and only mostly do highway driving..
I've encountered so slick conditions up here so even studded tires had have trouble gripping on ice even in low speeds.. Imagine 2" och hard packed snow and then rain on that and then just above freezeing temps.. Slicker than a skating rink.. Fun tho :alright
Longer studs will make the car unstable and not usable for normal road conditions. Only rallye drivers has any use for them but they don't drive tarmac with them they just use it for competition..

Wow, I suddenly have even more respect for Sweden. 2mm isn't that much, and for them to limit it means they're thinking about the roads as well. I don't think we have a limit her per say, but I know the studded tired I've seen exceed the 2mm mark. And you're right, driving on studs like that ruins the cars handling and braking on anything other than ice. Plus, they completely destroy the roads. For instance - the idiots around me here (in Boulder, specifically) are known to drive around on their studded snow tires all year round. We might have snow on the roads for 2 - 3 months a year, but these idiots have to be prepared for that freakish snowstorm that turns their lawns white in April or Sept. I mean, even when it does snow it doesn't stick usually, except from late November till early February. But since the 'special' people drive on the studs all year, we have some of the worst roads I've ever seen. Around the Boulder area you can water-ski in the ruts on the road in the rain. It's that bad. My 540i6 tramlines pretty badly, and I don't drive on certain roads there because even though I expect it I can't control the car when it switches directions. All because some people need to 'be prepared'. Sometimes I hate people....oh wait. I normally hate these idiots...:mad Included for reference is the best picture I can find of an example if our studded tires - they don't look too bad but I've seen bigger. These studs are a little worn down.

I will say that where I live we don't need studs - further north than here you might, but even then I would rather use the studless tires. I drove on studded tires last year in someone elses car, and I've owned Blizzaks before, and I prefer the Blizzaks. They grip even ice well enough, and are much better at everything else compared to studded. My $.02.

I'm working to try to ban studs in Oregon. I'm fine with chains in the mountains, but like Fox said the roads in Oregon are horrible because of the studded tires. We'd save over $100M in road repair costs every year if we outlawed them.
And this thread has me loving my touring even more. I hate to admit I was thinking of cheating on her with an e39 touring, there are 4 for sale here in PDX, 2 528it manuals, and 2 540it under $7k. Tempting.

Winter beater to spare the E34? :D And I'm not gonna get into the stud thing again - I get angry easily talking about people too stupid to exist. Why can't we just slaughter them like the sheep they are?

Why not just slap a heavy tax onto the purchase of snow tires? $100M divided by the number of studed tires in current use will get you the necessary number. As always, I think the people doing the damage should be the ones paying for it.
I really can't imagine changing tires twice a year. :help

Well, if you did that it might put a bit more money in the state's coffers, but I doubt it would go towards our roads. Tehy're running too short lately, so I'm sure it would get 'appropriated'. :( That said, I'm also pretty sure that a tax like that would quite handily prevent anyone from buying said tires, so in the end it would still work. ;)
Also, changing wheels isn't that bad, I just got done swapping on my snows, and it took me about 40 mins, and most of that was figuring out where to put the jack. Spare wheels FTW!! :buttrock
Speaking of the snow tires, damn. I had no idea how loud the tires on the car were until I started driving home from my storage unit. The aggressive patterned snow tires are silent compared to the mostly worn out 18's that were on there. Well, actually, the snow tires are seem totally silent, compared to anything. I like these tires. And my steering is now really light - like really REALLY light. Now it feels like I have power steering! I'm shocked at how much difference the tires made in the steering weight - the 18's aren't that much wider... All in all, I loving the snows. Bring it on, Winter!! :stickoutt

Long studs used for ice racing.. This is the real mcoy.. They even have motorcycles that compete with long studs or spikes.. :buttrock
Some idiots here run studs year rown but if the cops catches them it's 1500 sek fine.. Studs do wear tarmac but so does trucks and the rest of the road going public. If you have winter conditions you need studded tires to rough up the surface so the studsless tires have something to grip at. Fine example of this issue here is at bus stops since heavy duty bustires doesn't come with studs they polish it up good trying to start and the studless drivers are like a drunk bambi on ice.
The anti stud lobby wants to ban studs basicly becouse they are to cheap to keep the roads maintained. Here they did a study that it's 42% safer to use studded tires as well as that most wrecks involving fatalaties was due to studless tires..
I've drove my former car on studless as they came with the car (Bought it from down south) and even tho it was front wheel drive it didn't handle well in winter conditions.. Rubber on ice = fail ..

Ran across a couple pics from 2007...This was after cleaning things up and letting it melt a bit. :) With some cheap Firestone Winterforce tires, my lowered Touring went through anything I asked it to without any issues...great car in the white stuff.

Cold off the camera. There's about 4" more snow now and it's still coming.
I'm out of town and forgot my phone. I did find my camera. This forced me to actually use a camera in lieu of the phone....

It hardly ever snows here... might get 1-2cm... did snow really heavy two years ago got about 15cm. and my E30 wouldn't move.
Last time there was about 1cm of snow, I had good sideways fun on my bald perished road tyres.
Studded snows are Illegal, Studless snows are allowed, but hard to buy, as it hardly ever snows.
I have a set of snowchains, though.

I pulled My wife's 2001 530i with summer tires up our hill with the touring which I had new snow tires on it. The touring Really touring rocked the snow and ice. The darn dsc on the e39 would not let me spin the tires at all, even when I pressed the button. Oh we'll, my fault for not having snow shoes on the e39.

Not exactly parked and covered in snow but there was action. Both cars are M50B20's. The touring is 5/96 520i/5 slicktop in black with LSD and it loves the snow :)
