M5:
3.6l
1/2 tank of gas
18" M parallels
UUC Short shifter
Dinan Chip
230lb driver

Touring:
Built S50 from race car (dunno specs, haven't dyno'd it yet)
JB Racing 8lb Flywheel
ZF 5 Speed trans
3.23lsd
Stock suspension
Naked Throwing Stars (with Merc center caps, lol)
200lb driver

Curious to see what everyone's predictions are. Of course the wild card is the S50, but based on the results assume it's putting out around 300 crank HP.

M5 because of the weight advantage.

Yeah, I'm taking the touring by a hair.

BTW, this happened today after visiting In-n-Out. It was on a closed course with professional drivers; it's not speculation. I'll post the actual results after we see some people chime in.

My guess:
I would think the touring would take the start, and in a straight line, but probably only till about 70-80.

The M5 would take it on a course, and anything over 80 especially top speed.

EDIT: I honestly didnt even read the poll options, and 80 is what I thought. (I love 3rd gear in an M5).

Impossible to say without knowing anything about the S50. Considering that the stock M5 has a substantial power advantage over a stock S50, it'd have to be a substantially built S50 to have a chance. All other things (and drivers) being equal of course.

Speculation is worthless without knowing what "built S50" means. It could be anything from a CAI and chip on a US one, to cams and boost on a Euro.

If it's a US one and not blown, I say S38.

well then the m5. More power, less weight.

By "built", do you mean like Dolly Parton "built" ?:)

i would go for the m5, especially at highway speed

M5. No, that's not a biased opinion XD.

Really though, power/weight says it all.

Well, I've had the good fortune of driving a wicked built s52 powered e36 m3. The car was crazy out of the hole, and would pull like a train too. It dynoed at 268/244 at the wheels, and other than possibly going up in compression from stock there wasn't anything short of FI that could be done for more power at the time. Later on after the car was wrecked Sunbelt came out with another set of cams that are supposedly good for 280hp. I'd say the s50 you're describing would take something on the likes of near 20k in parts and work in order to get to the power mark we're talking about, and then still have more e34 weight to drag around than in the e36. I'd be amazed if the m5 didn't grab it by the throat and play "alpha dog" with it.

BTW, someone send me a double double. It's been a few years.

well then the m5. More power, less weight.

umm m5 weighs MORE than a 5 speed touring, by at least 100 lbs, maybe more.

a 5 speed touring is 100+ lbs lighter than an m50 auto touring, and that should be 200 lbs lighter than the m5... the m5 and 540 are both heavier according to published curb weights. last time I saw the 525i Touring Dual sunroof was expected to come in at 3800, and you lose 100lbs with the 5 speed swap. M5 is 4000lbs.

besides, we already know an s52 touring 5 with a 3.46 is faster in the quarter than an m5, so I expect the 'built s50' to make up for the slight gearing disadvantage... if it can avoid roasting the tires in first and second or bogging hard off the line.

so far though we have a null question...
faster how? top speed run, 100-180? 0-100-0? 0-60? quarter mile?

m5 faster over 135, cause the touring is going to top out at a gear limited 140.

otherwise this is just benchracing, and should be in OT ;) *wink*

I would guess that the S50 in Jack's car (Jax S38 on bf.c) is putting out around 300hp at the crank to run as well as it did. He jumped the start, but held his lead all the way to 80. I started to run him down after that but we both let off before getting too crazy. I think the gearing of the ZF box helped him a lot, as I was not even through 3rd and he was well into 4th.

We were both very impressed with the performance of his touring, to say the least. Now it's time to get it on a dyno so we can get an idea just how healthy the motor is; it came directly out of an M3 track car a number of years ago and Jack just now got around to putting it into something. :)

It was the 30 extra pounds the M5 was carrying in the seat that held it back.. :D
