I have been in contact with Rob Levinson (http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/member.php?u=553) at UUC Motorwerks (http://www.uucmotorwerks.com/) regarding a custom-made DSSR for the 540i/6.
Information regarding the DSSR, it's practicality, application, etc. can all be found on UUC's DSSR Info Page (http://www.uucmotorwerks.com/dssr/).
Prior to the yesterday, Rob unfortunately never produced a DSSR compatible with the 540i/6 transmission.
With the abundance of tranny swap threads the past few weeks, I contacted member mhax (http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/member.php?u=139217) regarding his 6-speed conversion.
We now have the measurement, center-pin to center-pin, needed for UUC Motorwerks to produce a DSSR for the 540i/6!
Before they can manufacture it, however, Rob requested that I accumulate a list of interested buyers to ensure it's worth his investment.
If you are seriously interested in a DSSR for your 540i/6, please enter your BfC username below.

How much do these run again?
Grush

I though 540/6 used the same transmission as the Euro 3.8/6 M5s.
Guess I was wrong.
Interesting.

How much do these run again?
as stated on the DSSR hyperlink provided above,
most applications $110-$199, introductory price $99-$149
I though 540/6 used the same transmission as the Euro 3.8/6 M5s.
I was accidentally shipped that DSSR from UUC originally,
refused to fit the tranny and by a long-shot. once we order,
this new DSSR will be exchanged for the one sitting on my table!
I will know for sure tonight.
I will know for sure tonight.
I suppose I should add my name... Does the Exhaust need to be dropped again to do this? Its odd that my Remote issue has really majorly sapped my enthusiasm for spending money on this car... I just feel like I was on the path to Enlightenment and I took a wrong turn into Stupidville and I can't find my way out...

Not anything sweet enough to make you want to sell me yours. :( I'm stuck paying for summer classes at the moment which has effectively emptied my bank account to the point where I cannot consider any unnecessary upgrades for a while. :(

On second thought, I like my automatic. ;) :shifty
I have the e39 ussr from uuc. It put the shifter in a slightly awkward position, but I'm fixing that now.

don't sweat the little things, man, this is a drivability upgrade!
please repost the list and add your name, it'd be a huge upgrade.

from my understanding, these will go right into production.
add your name to the list and get us that next step closer!

that's how rob explained it to me, the shift pattern is moved.
why not consider this fitted 540i/6 DSSR instead of modifying yours?
go ahead, repost the list with your name on it, save yourself the work. ;)

Different models have different prices. Additionally, since this is stated as a "group buy" it would make sense that there would be a discount. Thanks.

the UUC DSSR is a worthy addition to any SSK kit, regardless of brand.
these are not typically included with a UUC SSK order, however,
so if you'd like to add one to either of your E34s, now is the perfect time.

How much is this going to be? What improvement will this part provide? Not familiar with DSSRs at all. Sucks my transmission is out of my car right now getting a new clutch and UUC Evo 3. Does this part require dropping the transmission?

UUC has put together a pretty thorough write-up on their site

Here, I'm still a fan myself. The car hauls butt pretty good; 5 speed with lsd, x pipe, stiff suspension. A good car to pair up with the very usable and practical 540/6.

unfortunately not, every tranny seems to be different hence the issue at hand
they will bolt up and function just fine, but the entire shift pattern moves forward/back
I'd love to see another name added to the list, but I don't know if it's all that practical :dunno
I want this but I don't think my mechanic wants my car to sit on the lift any longer than it has to.
the sooner we reach 10 names, the sooner the part is produced
for the marginal cost of the part, I'd recommend hopping on board :D

nikos, are you still a 540i/6 owner? I know you drive the honda these days
if you are in fact an owner, would you be interested in the DSSR?
I really need support from the board's 6-speed owners to reach the 10-person target
so the thread says from 99-149?? what is the grand total for this parts, does anyone know??
that will be determined by rob at UUC once we submit our group order
I imagine it'll be toward the bottom end of that range, but I can't confirm.

jehu, I understand you're knee deep in other E34 issues and tranny drops don't come easy
but in the event that you have something else done to your car in the near future
it'd be a real help to have your name on the buyer's list and the fitted DSSR in your possession!

Man think about more down the road...when you end up getting a UUC SSK, this will be an extra upgrade that only a select few will have :D
Plus even with the UUC SSK there is still some sloppiness. Thats what I have read. Can someone verify??
Also, does Boogieman know about this?? Im sure he would like to get one for his awesomeness

I have one (finally) being delivered tomorrow for the M3. I hope to get it installed next week. I'll report back if nobody else does before then. I do know from personal experience that the UUC SSK without the DSSR in an M3 is still sloppy as hell after a period of time. That's what prompted me to go ahead and buy it with the SSK instead of trying to sort out the bushings that are there.
I'd buy one for the 5 if it was available. Slow cars want to shift slick too, you know. :(

there is definitely still some sloppiness after installing only the SSK
that's my situation now, actually, hence my push for this DSSR setup
I don't know if boogie(boy) has gotten the word yet, I'll send him a PM.

BUmp... do you actually need to drop the tranny and or the exhaust or can it be done even if a tight fit just up on a lift?

spoke with rob on the phone yesterday, we're in business people!
he'll be ready to send me the prototype at the end of next week,
at which point I'll install, test, and provide feedback. if all is well,
he can have batches ready to order within 2-3 weeks from now!
the price point is $129 for each DSSR, however he said he would be
more than happy to provide free shipping/10% discount to anyone who
buys a UUC SSK at the same time (extended father's day promotion).
rob is a real level-headed guy, so don't be afraid to ask for favors! :D
I thank everyone who has signed up for a unit and supported the cause,
I'll be sure to install the prototype pronto and get these units in our cars!

at which point I'll install, test, and provide feedback. if all is well,
he can have batches ready to order within 2-3 weeks from now!
the price point is $129 for each DSSR, however he said he would be
more than happy to provide free shipping/10% discount to anyone who
buys a UUC SSK at the same time (extended father's day promotion).
rob is a real level-headed guy, so don't be afraid to ask for favors! :D
I thank everyone who has signed up for a unit and supported the cause,
I'll be sure to install the prototype pronto and get these units in our cars!

So...any news? Have you had the chance to install this?
Ran into a fellow bmw enthusiast yesterday at Autozone. He has a E36 m3. With only the SSK installed, he said it dramatically improved the shifter feel. He said that with the DSSR installed, there is extremely little play in the shifter...

I spoke with Rob Levinson yesterday, there was a production delay :rolleyes
he is moving warehouses and all the manufacturing goodies to a new locale
during the move, he is accumulating backorders which all need filling
he asked me to call thursday of this week coming for the prototype model
as soon as he ships me the prototype and it tests okay, we'll be in business
sorry this is dragging on so long guys, it's entirely on UUC's end and not my own :dunno

***07/18 UPDATE***
I am expecting to receive the DSSR early this coming week

Honestly there's no reason it shouldn't fit as long as it's even remotely within the correct length. The worst case scenario is that it would change the angle of the shifter either forward or rearward a few degrees depending on if it were too long or too short. Nothing that would really make it not work right.

I've been waiting for my order to arrive, item says it shipped.
I called rob two days ago and left a message to get back at me,
if I don't hear from him by noon tomorrow I'll call again.
like ben said, even if a measurement is slightly off, the only
issue would be a slight shift forward/back in the entire shift pattern.

he asked for a week and a half before anyone places orders so he can stock,
but I was told to call him thursday morning (a week from today) to confirm it all.
we just so happen to catch rob and UUC in the middle of their warehousing moving process,
so the delays in the actual production and even in e-mail response is an understandable result

Great!
Now, how about for 525s and 535s?
Can you be more specific about how awesome it is? For instance if the shifter play would allow you to in Neutral move the stick to the right and left of center perhaps as muich as two inches ( not sure I didn't measure but its more than a 1/2 inch) does the DSSR limit that by more than half each way? How much play is there in the shifter now? Remond me . did you have to drop the exhaust to install this or were you able to get it on just by going up on a lift?

Do you have the EVO 3 shifter installed on your car or is it still stock? I just installed an EVO 3 tonight and there is not much side to side play with just the shifter change. Once the DSSR is installed, the lateral movement drops to less than 10mm from center, left and right. It tightens all the slop up and makes for as perfect of a mechanism as can be had with this vehicle. I know the stock shifter is like a spoon in a bowl full of spaghetti, but the EVO3 shifter makes it much tighter and shortens the throw by a claimed 40%. I think it's more like 60%, but who's measuring. The DSSR is the icing on the cake and tightens up all of the play that's left, which isn't much, and makes it mechanically ideal. As far as the install goes, when I had mine on the lift tonight, it looks fairly easy to do this without having to drop or unbolt anything. I put the shifter in the car in 20 minutes and had to disconnect 1 end of the selector rod to do it. The other end is a little tighter to get to, but it can be done without too much aggrevation. Just thought I'd throw this out there for anyone who is still skeptical. Money well spent, in my opinion...I'm buying one as soon as they're available!

I got the 205 DRRS and it is tooooooo short. The SSK is in though, and feels good. What a thankless job getting to all that stuff.
This week I have done shocks and springs on my 540, a 20 piece suspension kit plus shocks and spring on my buddy's e38 740iS, and this SSK/DSSR. And worked on the 928.
I quit... I need a beer.
Carl
Too short? Weird.. maybe they sent you the wrong one? I had contacted UUC about this actually before Jessie when I was having my SSK installed. I asked the shop to measure in MM the length from the center of the two pins. They somehow didn't register my request for the measurement to be metric and gave me inches....8" that measurement does convert though to 205 mm which is the refrence in the part number.. have you measured the DSSR yourself to see its actuall 205mm?
CarlfromBoston
10-01-2009, 04:59 PM
The dssr they sent was 8"... Didn't fit, too short.
p.s. I have driven a few miles with the SSK, and it is a much shorter throw, but still a good amount of lateral play. Not the earth shattering change I was hoping for. Maybe the dssr and some new bushings for the front of the aluminum shift piece will help. And a new rubber bushing for the rear of that piece as well.

from my experience, the shorter throw isn't as dramatic with the 6-speed as it is with the 5,
however the lateral play should be mostly addressed with the addition of the DSSR.
I have no idea why you're having a bad fit, are you sure you're installing it correctly?

Success! The 215mm dssr was right on for length, the new carrier arm bushings went on and it is much improved. I am 100% satisfied with it, though my 928 shifter is still worlds tighter and more precise. That one has everything done to it as well and sets the bar pretty high.
Going under there this time was 1 hour, not 3 like the first time. Happy, happy!!!

From 10/94-up they went to a bent selector according to ReaOEM. So I wonder if all the car from 10/94 should ask for the 215mm DSSR rather than the 205mm DSSR? Can anyone confirm this?
TIA!

As I mentioned above a Shop measured mine albeit in inches at 8" between the center points of the two pins over which the ends of the selector rod fits.. that is 205mm and my Build date was 12-13-94 so maybe near the date they began altering certain parts there was some inconsistancy in application..

Possibly.. I am trying to diagnose a rear end whine and if repairing it neccesitates dropping the exhaust it would be a great op to slap that in...
I will be in touch and live locally co maybe could pick it up?
In the meantime give this a listen and see if anything comes to mind for the whine appearing at about 50 seconds in

Let me know, I will meet you somewhere.
The whine? Rear diff or wheel bearing? E brake related? Run it slow on jack stands or a lift and you may find it.

Just ordered mine. Wondering if I needed to mention my production date. Will find out soon enough. I also have an EVO III SSK, so I am excited to feel the difference with the DSSR.

I plan to bring the car to a shop tomorrow and get it looked at. If I find repairs require the exhaust to come off to service the Diff or driveshaft I'll probably grab it . If I find somethign else I'll probably pass and let you know.

I talked to Rob and he is sending me a 215 mm dssr. There can be some discrepancy in what parts your car was made with between shift coupler and selector rod from the factory.
How hard was it to get a hold of Rob? I too ordered the DSSR from the link which is 205mm but I need the 215mm. I have called them for 5 days straight, they gave me voice mail, e-mail and to this day no response. I just need to have it exchanged for the correct one, same as you, but no luck getting anyone to do anything.
Thanks.
