View Full Version : How many blown 5 speeds have you heard of?
Out of curiosity, have you guys ever heard of a 5 speed on a M30 calling it quits? I've only really heard of troubles with the autos.
Trying to get a feel for how durable these are.

It's very very rare. The getrag 260 is one of the strongest transmissions Bmw ever made. With that said mine was bad when I got it. The only one I know of having issues though.

Sychros go, that's about it. The 260 is pretty robust, albeit not quite as much as the 265.

Considering you are in the market for used transmissions and it doesn't sound like you are the kinda guy who would DIY the job, it would cost you the price of another transmission.

There is a difference between the M30 getrag and M50 getrag. The M50 getrag's(250 I believe) are weak. They will last no problem, but they aren't really friendly if you want to make more power down the road plus if you shift rough they don't take that kindly either.

#1 you have a 525, it's a different transmission. #2 mine probably has a bent shift fork and #3 if there's anything wrong internally it's much cheaper to just buy a new one. A rebuild will be over a grand vs. buying another one for like 300 or less

I test drove a 91 about a year ago that had a 3rd gear problem. Basically wouldn't go into 3rd gear for me at all -- owner demonstrated that he had "learned" how to do it just fine. Something was definitely effed though. I'm guessing either a linkage or a shift fork issue (didn't investigate what it actually was). The car had 224k miles on it.

I mean you DO realize it's made by Getrag and installed by bmw, right?

I have seen 2 of them go bad. They were popping out of gear or hard to get into 2nd due to syncros. But they have over 300K on them and were used for the last 100k miles for Auto xing or track use.
Autos.. I have seen them go out anywhere from 120k to 200k.
used for the last 100k miles for Auto xing or track use.
thats a lot of track use.

When I first bought my 525, the transmission made quite a bit of noise and was stuck in third gear, though it was "driveable". Tranny shop could not even get it apart to see what had happened. It was easy to find a replacement, though.
Edit: Original trans lasted 290k

OK driving to track.. or Auto X. running the event then driving back..= 100k miles.
thats still very impressive!

Totally depends on upkeep and maintenance. I had one that didn't necessarily bite it, but it was noisy. When I went to drain the oil and refill it was basically dry. Lord knows how long it had been run dry. Obviously it needed new seals. Actually wasn't too awful after new seals and a refill but its anybody's guess how long it will hold up.

I've never heard of an actually Broken one. Mine has iffy synchros, which seems common, and apparently their internal shift parts go after extended heavy use.
A rebuild will run you 1.5-3k depending on whether it's a random cheap shop or Jim Blanton doing the work. A used one can be had as low as 75 at a junkyard that's having a sale. Typically more like 200.

Yep change fluid every 50K miles. Use REdline.
Flushed it when I got it with a flush made for truck manuals. Then refilled.
