Brought my wifes E46 wagon in for a free clinic check-up at a local dealership and got some crazy quotes on some simple fixes.
Valve cover gasket leaking- $320 (its barly stained)
Expansion tank leaking- $395(just added alittle water that day i wonder if that was it)
Power stearing hose tank to cooler-$225
Belts are cracked-$265(changed them 3 years ago)
RT rear coil spring broke-$400(havent checked this out yet, maybe time for some H&R's)
Glad i have the tools and knowhow to do the work myself.

this is not a suprise, the dealer has expensive parts and labor.
The least ridiculous part is the springs since they can only be bought as a pair, and I think it's $240ish for a pair. It is fairly common for the springs to break and takes a minute to check. It might be hard to find touring specific springs but I'm sure through here or ebay you could find just a single rear spring for less than $50 and change it yourself in 15 minutes.

If I didnt do my own work there is no way I would have my car. I dont really trust anyone else working on my car anyways. At least you know exactly what was done and little parts that may need to be replaced in the future etc. I wouldnt be suprised if places charge people for parts that were never replaced. That quote is just for the one. I said the same thing about chaning in pairs. But he said that they would just need to change the one side. Thought that was weird.:confused
I found all the parts i need at Bavauto except the spring, but i might upgrade to H&R's

Hmph. I had one guy say he was going to do my Water pump for $130, then when I let him work on the car, he surprised me with a $300 bill. Needless to say I wasn't a happy camper.

www.eeuroparts.com are the cheapest I've found online. Plus they're in CT so you get stuff quick...

Probably, but I had no proof that is what he normally said, so I couldn't do anything about it. I just won't go back to him again. In fact, once I find his card I'll make sure to announce who he is on the forums, so no one else is tempted to use him. :)
