If I remember correctly the M5 3.73 is a large case and yours is a medium.

well there you go. its cuz of the manual trans. if both wheels spin you've got lsd, if not you dont. thats the fun way to find out:cool

you can always just crawl under you car and read it off the case.

I have done the burnout test several times. ALWAYS both wheels spin. I have a 4.27 open diff.

Maybe someone can clarify this for me.

Diffs with clutch packs get the "S" designation but, do the viscous diffs get the same "S" on the tag or something else?

Aluminum tag that will have your ratio on it and an "S" before if it's a limited slip.

any diff stamped with the "s" in yellow paint is an lsd. take a look at the tag for your ratio. mine is a 3.64 lsd.

E34s never came with a viscous diff.

Only e30s. i like the viscous in my buddy's 325e.

Everyone of my BMW's had an LSD except the e39 540i/6 too much moneys for the m5 diff and supporting components. I have installed half of them myself as they didn't come optioned with the car.

S3.64 535i/5
S3.91 535i/5
S4.10 325i/5

and i did a peel out (still waiting to do the tranny) in the gravel, dirt just to make sure, and both, i repeat BOTH wheels spun as there were two upturned spots from both rear wheels. not sure if an owner put in an LSD but i'd like to find out what it is when i get time to get it on the lift

Guys, doing a burnout isn't a valid test for LSD or no LSD. If you're going dead straight it's plausible you'll spin both wheels. Try it while turning and it'll be a different story.

ya i just realized it im a dumass sorry

the only real test on the ground is doing a donut, but a legit test is to jack it up and spin the wheel, if the other wheel spins the opposite way you have lsd. something tells me i dont so what would be an opportune one, 3.73?
