BMW does not recommend swapping the run flats with regular tires. The suspension was partly designed with having run flats. It's your choice, though. Some people have done it.

either way, don't buy cheap tires... they will be noisy and generally suck

It is generally accepted that RFTs sucked big time in 2006. I switched mine for non RFTs and got a buttery soft ride.
However...I have sport suspension and so it worked out. Otherwise it would have been a little bouncy.
If you were to tell me it was a 2009, I would say stick with RFT. You would probably not even think about it because the cars are tuned softer for the RFT.
But for a 2006 Sport, I think you're good to switch. ;)

I would get a decent tire so you can maintain a factory feel and level of performance. If a shop recommended to me that I put Raptor or Kumho tires on my BMW I would never go back to that place again. If you like the way your car rides and handles with the runflats, get another set of them. If you want to soften it up a tad then switching would be ok. If you want to ruin your ride and performance, throw some $80/each tires on there.
