Clutch went, so I'm looking at options. Have not pulled it apart yet, so I have no idea what 172K miles has done to the flywheel. I see that new flywheels are big $$. I plan to go with a Sachs stock clutch as I'm not making big power (Dinan chip), and I'm trying to stay reasonably economical. Are there flywheel options? Recommendations? TIA

I don't think you will need to do anything to the flywheel. If you wanted to upgrade you could put in a e28 m5 flywheel/clutch but if you want to stay stock all you need is the clutch kit. I don't think the dual mass flywheels are meant to be resurfaced or anything.

What else needs to be done to switch to a single mass flywheel, or is that even practical?

And I'm not interested in titanium connecting rods :stickoutt

You want to go single mass. You can find a used one in good shape if you hunt around. The e28 setup will work, and shave a ton of weight out of your driveline.

Is there a write-up on this indicating what parts are needed?

Yes there is in fact: http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1038894&highlight=e28+m5+clutch+flywheel

The parts are quite simple to get. All you need is the e28 flywheel and flywheel bolts and after that you are using the e28 clutch kit. Everything else is same procedure.
