View Full Version : Ran into a previous owner..
The other day I was at my friend's house for the 9th day after his father's death (It's a Russian Orthodox thing) and ran into a old friend of mine who was the owner of my E34 from 80K to 150K. This is what he has told me:
He said that the e34 I own is a special edition? He claimed that it came from the factory with Various upgrades. First, he showed me the lid from the port for the code reader. It says "Dinan Software. Professional Mechanics Only" or something in that ball park.
He then showed me the Air box on the e34...And it has a opening toward the front of the car which sucks in the air. Looks unique and says Dinan on top. Does this come stock on all 540?!?
Also he said that the M5 filler plate for the rear tag is original and came that way from the factory.
The side skirts are also from a M5.
Also the seats which I have in the e34 are from a M5. They have memory and all.
After listening to him for a while, I began to question the authenticity of his story. Will someone please verify those statements? Thanks!!

the skirts did because its 95
sport seats? came with the manual 540i

The m5 skirts and the 95 540 skirts are the same part. Filler plate was added at some point. Dinan software and intake are Dinan parts.

Wow that guy is, err, uninformed with a bit of an imagination as well. :rofl
Ten bucks said it wore ///M badges under his ownership.

Various Dinan upgrades such as intake or software do NOT come from the factory, those would come from Mr. Dinan. Skirts on the 95, as Bin said are the same.

Dinan parts could be dealer installed.
Hence the PO's confusion.
But they are not factory.

I have the Dinan cold air intake from a previous owner. Its pretty much just a fluted piece of plastic that interfaces with the factory air box (round piece that takes the place of the factory inlet). Further they put a oiled filter similar to K&N in there to increase flow. Typical Dynan stock appearance attempt at performance. If you remove some of the shrouding behind the passenger headlight you'll see what Im talking about. As to the special addition thing, somone probably sold it to him under that story, and now he's passed the fable down to you. (I suppose the dealer might have ffered the origional buyer some "special" "limited edition" upgrades)
thats what I thought...and he was throwing numbers such as 103 in US or something...and I wasn't buying it but I didn't want to just call him out in front of all these people...especially because he is older than I am...
But yeah, I'll get pics of the air box because I think it looks neat...other than that, dinan chip will be for sale at $50 if anyone wants it once I get the war chip...
Thanks guys for all the input.

is the Dinan chip for the 540 the same as the 530? i don't think so but i know the Tuner chip says 540/530? any one know?

no, dinan sells several dozen chips for the 540 alone.
you need to confirm your DME number when ordering.

The only E34 with production numbers near there is the 540i M-Sport.

^^^ precisely, and people know it. That's why right now you can search e34's on ebay and you're bound to find at least one 540/6 calling itself an M-Sport that's not. People hang their hat on these cars reputation and lets face it, half the people who own these cars do so for immage and exclusivity. Hence the story's of pedigree and 'here's what makes this car so special'. I think thats just a part of the culture for first owners of a BMW and it flows down to the resale market.
well I have read about the 540iLE limited edition?!? Were those made only in 95?? Have you guys heard of these?

Never heard about them most likely because they did not exist in the US. Where did you read this?
I ran into the PO of this car on the highway ,lol.. He was in an older 6 series and was kind of hauling a$$ so I figured I'd blow his doors off , I figured he was expecting it.. so anyway I blast past him for a few miles and then let him catch up so he comes along side and I look over to see him making the universal hand signal for rolll yo window down I want to shout at you while we're going 60 mph!... He says ;" I used to own that car!!!!!" I said Yah? He says;" Yah It was in great shape!" I say :"yah, I"m trying to keep it that way and I hold up one of the new lemforder Upper Thrust Arms still in the bag with lemforder printed all over it,lol.. so I said Thanks for taking such good care of it... take it easy!lol all this as we're screaming along two lane Rt 2 westbound where he bailed onto I495 north

There was an Olympic Games Edition in either 94 or 95 I beleive. It had special door sills, always came in green w/ parchment. It had green piping around the edges of the seats inside as well. They were 525's if I remember correctly.
There was also the 540i M-Sport mentioned above in 95. It was a special order only BMW Individual car that had some M-Tech parts on it but the standard 540 engine/trans. Only 200 of those were made. Suspension bits are not cheap. <- ( read as: my car needs shocks :( )
