Buying a Z4, any input?

Hey everyone,

So i've been in need of a newer car since my blazer is more of a project vehicle than a daily driver. After looking at a Pontiac Solstice I found a Z4 and after that I was totally sold on the z4.

It looks like im probably going to buy a 2006 3.0SI. I really want to buy an 06 z4 M, but at 27,900 it may out of my price range unless I can talk the dealer down farther (looks like its already under KBB value). Has anyone heard of any problems with the 3.0SI's or the Ms? Any other relevant information about a 2006 or newer SI/M would be much apprecaited!

So far I haven't heard of anything bad and the 3.0SI motor seems pretty impressive.

I don't know about where you live, but in the Portland area most dealers aren't using KBB. I've found most use Manheim (spelling) which gives the auction prices for cars.

Also if you were considering the Solstice did you also look at the SKY (in my signature) it's a 'completely' different car than the Solstice and is more luxurious in MANY ways than the Solstice. Interiors and suspension, bodywork and even the tops are different. Also with the GM tune (which I have) it's faster than the S54 (///M edition) Z4. Also the GM tune is covered under warranty.

I was totally sold on the Z4 myself after driving 350z's, Rx-8's... I finally settled on the 2006 3.0si... perfect balance of gas mileage, insurance costs, looks, speed, and handling... I say go for it, they are phenomenal :)

Also if you were considering the Solstice did you also look at the SKY (in my signature) it's a 'completely' different car than the Solstice and is more luxurious in MANY ways than the Solstice. Interiors and suspension, bodywork and even the tops are different. Also with the GM tune (which I have) it's faster than the S54 (///M edition) Z4. Also the GM tune is covered under warranty.

Wow thanks for the info. Yeah I was really surprised when the insurance for the Z4 was almost the same price as an 08 Chevy Colorado ( I was going to get another truck, but i already have an SUV so why bother I thought)

I might have gone with the solstice if I didn't fit better in the Z4. Im a little bit bigger than average at 6'5" and when I would get into the solstice, my knee would hit the center console.

Do you have any auction info on the z4Ms? The particular Z4m I was looking at is located around Dallas Texas. I am located in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

When my older brother gets back home later this month hopefully he can help me locate a good deal on a z4. (hes one of those intense business people and used to sell cars as a hobby)

I wouldn't call them junk at all. Infact I can't remember any GM cars having the floor pan or rear differentials fall off the cars or lockup at highway speeds, these are things that are common on E36, E46 and Z3s, I don't know if the Z4 has the same problems but BEWARE!!! The problem probably plagues other BMW models too.

The problem with using those examples is that noone outside of the enthusiast community has heard of the diffs falling off cars, or the rear floorpan popping out or lockup at highway speeds. Its not like the tires blowing out on ford explorers in the late 90s. Just because there's a community where at least some of the people coming together because they have these problems to find other people with the same problems doesn't mean the problem is as widespread as they would have you believe. Not a representative sample of the population.

Seems there is a whole section on skyroadster dot com on problems with these jewles! My favorite thread was "fistfull of door handle" where it talks about the chevy cobalt door handles falling off! :D

And the 3.0si is 5.1 0-60... so you will still whip a sky redline :)

the 3.0si's are good cars.

Have not had alot of problems with them since start of production.

Too bad you're all the way across the country. I'd love to school ya for pinks, then I could turn your 'GM Tuned' Solstice/Sky into a bird feeder in my yard. I have a perfect spot picked out for it, right next to the Pink Flamingo.
