View Full Version : Steering wheel play with no impact on direction?

I have a 2001 530i Sport.

Over the last number of months I have been troubled with the car seeming to have a bit of a mind of its own when the road has those deep dips at intersections. The car will shift directions a bit with no feel on the steering wheel.

On a test drive with my local BMW mechanic today he noticed that the steering wheel can be turned slightly in both directions with no impact on the direction the car is heading. He has not completed a full diagnostic yet.

I am wondering if anyone has had the same problem. If so, what was it and what did you do to correct it?

Steering wheel is sloppy. Loose. Can be rotated a clockwise or counter-clockwise several degrees in each direction without feedback...

1). Check tie rods.
2). Check Upper Thrust Arm bushings and balljoints.
3). Check Lower Control Arm bushings and balljoints.
4). Front struts, check them too.
5). Outside shot, check the steering rack itself.
6). Check power steering fluid, pump etc.

It's most likely #1, possibly #2 and #3.

I also have a 2001 530 sport and had the same problem...

It was my thrust arm bushings. sine the ball joint was OK, I just changed the bushings. Total cost $70 Cdn.

My money is on worn out thrust arm bushings. There's a DIY on how to replace them on these forums. However, it's a somewhat involved job. Do some searching on the forums and make a decision on whether you want to do it or have your mechanic do it.

I am thinking that this job is beyond me. I have done the FSU, oil changes, brakes, etc... but don't think I could manage the bushings. Plus, I don't have any of the tools.

When changed did people use OEM bushings? Also, would you need an alignment after changing these?

I used OEM bushings (Boge) and didn't think I need an alignment as the length should be the same.

However after 30,000 KM I guess the car was aligned with the worn bushings, as my inner edge of the tires are worn about 1/16" more than the outside. :(

So, an alignment is a good idea.
