Hi,
I've been out of the BMW loop for a couple years now. I found an E39 M5 w/ 55k miles for 27k. I seem to remember these going for 40k around 2005.
So, is this a good deal? Does it mean that all of these cars are beat to hell now?

Hi there,
Need to know more, what year? condition? verified mileage? service history? independantly checked?
Even if it was the very last of the E39 M5, I think it's overpriced by quite some margin - it appears the seller is really trying to make some extra 'Dolla' with that low mileage figure.
Have a look in the usual places for car values, I think the US has a similar national level website to search for used cars - I used to look on Autotrader.com but i think they filter non geographic USA users out via IP addresses. From there you can see if the car is sensibly priced or not.
If it does turn out to be genuine and a minter, try to bargain him down a few thousand on the current basis that I'm thinking it's overpriced. I do know though, that in the USA, 2nd hand car's values differ by a significant proportion to the same exact model here in the UK. There are a few M5's up at the £14,15,16 and 17 grand mark here so between $21-27K USD - so maybe on the face of 'asking prices' it looks like it's 'priced quite similarly' - as for you're last question, there are quite a few 'dog' M5's out there, but overall, I don't think the E39 M5 has or will become quite as 'Dog' as the E36 M3 became. The E46, looks to be heading that way a little bit too. M5 owners do 'tend' to be older more well off owners who actually looked after these cars - just hope yer 27K miler turns out to be a minter!
Cheers! Dennis! West London UK!

I've found E39 M5s with 65k miles for under $20k.

I believe 2003 (or some 2002) are still going strong, but I've also seen 2000-02 M5s in very affordable price as a fun car!
You gotta remember though, our E39 generation is getting old over all == depreciate in value.
