How did you blow it? Overheating or pop the block?

Ive got a m50 from a 91 525i, same engine.
140k on the clock, maintained well. No oil pan on it though (you can use yours anyways)
$500 + shipping
You may be better off finding one in your state. I would call around to local yards.

s52? educate me please. I would assume that this is an engine code. is it just a better engine than the m50? and what would i have to change to make this work or is it just a direct swap?

S52 is the engine out of a 96+ M3 It's gonna cost you a lot more to go this way than to get an M50.

You could also look for a later M52 (2.8 or 3.0) to swap in for a little extra oomph, but extra work. Depends on how much time and $ you have.

yeah this is my daily driver. fortunetaly i also have my pick up so ive got a way around. the pick up just ends costing more in gas and it ends up being a pain if i have any more than 1 other person with me. But to the point i'm looking for the simplest fix. just a good replacement motor to get it back on the road.

yeah pretty much being stupid. Tryin to act cool for my cousin. He drove us home he was my DD and well a few miles from home i had him pull over to show him how its done. well lets just say i should have stayed my a$$ in the passenger seat. I def. caught the wrong gear..............red lined the hell out of it and it popped. thankfully we were almost home so it limped into my neighborhood and died. We had to walk a few blocks but you know thats what you get for being stupid. plus it has somewhere around 285k on the clock. so it was time anyway.:(

285k...it was time I suppose. Remember to keep the intake manifold of the old one, OBD-II guys love that thing.

It will, kessler is snorting something that bin gave him
91 and 92 used a non vanos m50
93-95 used a vanos m50
So unless I'm missing something that kessler would like to explain???

by chance does anyone know the approx. weight of the m50 engine for shipping info.
alright guys need a little advice.
1. guy in wisconsin has motor with 145k for 500 + shipping no warranty (well maintained)
2. bavarian auto recycling has motor with 165k for 750+ shipping 2 year warranty
3. My brother has a hook up through a local shop. motor has 77k + 170psi across all cyclinders. + 6 month warranty . delivered anywhere i want $1100.00
What do you guys think? choice 1,2,or 3
E34ührer
05-29-2009, 12:53 PM
I vote 1 or 3. 3 is more attractive to me because of milage...but 1 is half the price.
77k on an M50 is just beginning to stretch it's legs...

1 or 3, leaning towards 3. Never number 2.
busyphil365
05-29-2009, 01:20 PM
Yeah guys i'm def. leaning towards # 3. but i'm wandering why everyone is saying never #2. it does have a 2 year warranty. also what do these motors weigh so i can find out shipping price. that will def. help with the decision.

Deal with BAR and you'll find out.

that bad huh? well that eliminates option 2.
who knows the motor weight? because were down to option 1 and option 3. if its going to be around the same price when shipping is added to option 1. then option 3's the winner.
