I have always enjoyed the staggered look similar to what you have now. The original ///M3's had 235/40R17 all around, but those are becoming rare, now. I recommend:
225/45R17 front
245 or 255/40R17 rear (especially if you have a wider rear rim, looks nice and squared off)

What size rim(s)?

Keeping the same rolling diameter would be ideal. I am running 225/45 and 245/40 on 7.5/8.5x17 rims and it keeps a nice squared tire, and is very close rolling diameter..

I'm running 235/40/17 all around; I really like the way the car handles with the setup, even on stock suspension.

Heres a cool website I found for comparing different sizes, it even give you info about your speedometer and if/how much it would be off. Perhaps it will be useful to you:

I am very glad to know you can run 235/40 on the 7.5 in the front and on the rear 8.5. Not as many choices in that size, but enough to find a good set.

+1
I too use the same size and it's perfect. Someday I'm hoping to put 8.5's on the front too, but the only real downside with 245/40R17 tires is that there are less tire brands/models produced in that size.

These cars have a tendecy to understeer that is exacerbated by the staggered set-up.
Maybe I should trade my 8.5 rears for for someone's 7.5 fronts.

The rear does have a little stretch though, so if you're a perfection and it's gonna bug you, you might not want to.
I mean honestly, it's only really noticeable if you really look at it, and 99 percent of people wouldn't even notice it, but you know how us car people are sometimes :lol
edit: btw, Sumitomo HTR-Z II is what I have and they're a pretty decent tire for the money.

By stretched, do you mean the front is rounded out or the back is rounded in?
After you posted, I checked Tire Rack and Sumi'. The F1A's and several other good tires are in this size too. I am sure I will go that direction.
Do you want to trade your rears for my fronts or vice versa?
