Yes i blew the Diff yet again :redspot
that's 2 in one month , i guess the globs of torque just destroy them :( :devillook
well at least the 530i has a lsd that i can take. Is there any way to upgrade these Diffs to take more of a beating.

It's really quite rare for differentials to go bad like that. I'm wondering if some of your drive-line parts like the guibo, center bearing, and rear cv need replacing. If those were bad it could put a lot more strain on the diff.

How did you blow 2 diffs? What kind of power are you making....Something else is clearly wrong.

ill have to ask Ben i assume all of that was replaced there is no play in the drive shaft.
yeah the whole drive shaft was replaced at 185,000

Damn near EVERYTHING on this car is new. Redfive owned it prior, and over the past two years between the two of us working on it I can hardly think of anything that hasn't been replaced or checked. The first diff started making noise like as soon as Tony got it, 3.46LSD. The second one I put in when the first blew, 4.10 open diff. I know this diff is good, it came out of a car I drove.

:dunno It's an m30 with an SS maf kit on it. 5 speed, but really it's not making the power it did with the blower on the car. The blower's not on it anymore, so that wouldn't remotely explain the second diff.

First one yes, second one no.

My bad, I forgot this was Redfive's old car. What else could be the culprit? I'm curious to know why these would keep on blowing, especially so quickly.

What have you been doing to my poor car? I'm not sure how you manage to do that with a stock engine and stock tires. I've run much more on my differentials.
You need to change your name to the diff-buster.

i got off of exit 18 , shifted into 3rd and snap crackle POP and BOOM. the funny thing is i can put the car in gear the drive shaft spins and the speedo works but the car goes no were i wonder if the diff isn't totally wrecked.

It's wrecked. Very likely broken spiders, or bad pinion bearing.

well went to see if there was any fluid in the diff and nope there was less then a quarter in the diff. so i guess thats probably why it died. yet it made no noise it whined ever so slightly on deceleration. i remember the LSD whined like a dieing cat. i guess opens go quietly :)

Chirping tires in 4th is just not possible unless you're running an open diff, a rear end with 1/4 the stock ratio and you have 165/75/15's
The chirp was probably some metal on metal contact as your diff begs for more fluid.

No, you can totally run the engine to like 4 grand and dump the clutch and chirp 4th. Diff just won't last too long. BTW, it was an open 4.10...

Maybe if you're sitting still and do that ...I guess I should have clarified that I referred to actually driving the car...(i.e. going from 3rd to 4th)..not dropping the clutch at a stop light while in 4th.
Of course an open diff makes it more possible, and believe the correct term would be chirp the 'tire'.

Hahaha see above, I DON'T want to do it because I don't want broken stuff. Believe it or not, you can beat on your car gently, or you can be violent, but the cars I've pulled parts off of weren't cars I drove as drivers, they were picked up as parts cars.

i supposed if I lifted at WOT on top of 3rd, did a full speed turn in AND dumped the clutch (ala clutch kick to send the car sideways) I could see spinning tires in 4th with a M30.
Whatever you are doing to break traction in 4th in a stock m30 powered car, you got the answer to why the diffs are dying...
if you want to re-configure a bmw lsd to be stronger, just remove 2 spacers and add 2 more clutches to it. its designed to do it from the factory.
heres the thread:
http://www.e30tech.com/forum/showthread.php?t=44131
take LSD apart, remove 2 spacer things, install 2 more clutch plates (buy them new or pillage another oem lsd)

Chirping 4th? What kind of clutch does that thing have?
I'll reveal the secret. Its a Dinan HD pressure plate designed to work with the S2 turbo 535. It has mad pressure.
Dude.... It's a v8.
b30 220hp/207tq
M30 207hp/225tq
You feel the difference. I got to drive a stock 540/6 this weekend and I have to say that the M30 pulls better down low. Especially with the supercharger setup.
But still. I've lit the tires on my BMW in all the gears from a full speed roll but that's with the turbo and the tires were cold and there was some cornering involved. However, the driveline is always fully engaged. I never drop the clutch on my cars. That's the only way to preserve components running 2-3 times the factory power. (ie, the design safety factor)

stock head gasket i heard can take up to 24psi before having problems but i would upgrade the head studs anyway , just so i can feel safe.
