I know that some M60 engines had nikasil bore linings, but I don't know if the M30B25 or M50B25 engines had the same problems. Since I'm in the market for a 525i or 535i, it would help if someone would answer this.
thanks

99% sure M30 blocks are cast iron.. not sure about the cyl linings. m30 bottom ends are usually good for 400k +
Edit: 535s are M30s.... 525s are M20's and M50s.. right guys? M20s have timing BELTs though.. so avoid if possible. BMW timing chains never fail.

Tobin, since it seems you're new(er) to the engines, some information that may be handy about the M30- Part of the reason they weren't nikasil is the M30 started in the 60s. If you end up with an M30 parts can be sourced used from other generations/series that used the M30.

The m30 is so old it's practically made out of granite and dinosaur fossils.

George Washington's false teeth were made from M30 rods. Gums were goop from the bottom of a weeping M20.

The m30 is soo old it's practically made out of GODS REAL TEETH and dinosaur BONES.
Fixed because back then dinosaurs were still alive and god didn't have false teeth yet. :D
Check to see if the engine was replaced by BMW. I am 99% sure that M20 is not Nikasil...200K and no problems at all.

Doesn't the M50 have a cast iron block as well?

There is no nikasil in anything other than M60 family cars.
