while cruising down the road, my daughter powered the passenger side rear window down and when she tried to roll it back up, it would not go.
I pulled the panel when I got home and I can hear the motor running when the button is pushed (up or down) but the window will not go up. It sounds like something is broken inside the lift motor gear box.
Is this a common break?
I have an extra driver's side front door with the lift motor in place- will this motor swap over to the passenger side? A little searching on ebay indicates the motors are interchangeable. RR swaps with LF, and RF swaps with LR.

The motor drives the regulator inside with two large gears of plastic teeth. When these teeth break the motor will run but not move anything. From looking at part numbers for a car I'm parting it seems like you are right about the motor swaps. I'd give it a shot and see how it goes.

I first thought it was the clips that broke but upon inspection the lifting mechanism is intact and the clips are there.
I can get the window to go up and down by assisting it with my hand, but if I try pushing the button to go up, I can hear the motor run and there is some crunching going on inside the gearbox.
for the life of me, I cannot seem to figure out how to remove the gearbox. Everything seems to be riveted in place.

If you are able to get it to go up with assistance it is probably the motor, the gears are fairly robust. It sounds like your motor is going on the window. You will hear the motor humming but its not generating the right amount of power to push the window up - probably will go down on its own if you want to test the motor theory that way. So according to the Bently you need to drill the rivets to take out the old motor - and use the appropriate nut/bolt commbination to secure the new motor in place. Also the new motor will have a worm gear on it to replace the one on the old motor - so once the new motor is in all should be good.

cool, that's what I thought. I just compared the motor unit on my spare driver's front door and they appear to be identical. I will just steal that motor assembly from the donor door and swap it in.

The screw that holds the plastic end of the motor to the steel body is probably stripped. Not the screw, but the plastic that the screw is screwed into.

Couldn't be more timely. My rear window stopped working also. Looks like it's new motor time.
+1 same thing... rear driver's side.. down fine,up w/assist, clikcing when tried w/o. I just try not to use it..lol..
