I've been doing a lot of searching for auto -> manual swaps on E34s but 99% of the information seems to concern the I6 motors, for obvious reasons.

My 540's 5hp30 is dying(surprise, right? :o) and I'm considering options. T56 and ZF trannies are appealing, but I really don't know what I would need.... or if there are better options out there.

Educate me please :help

6 speed swap brothers unite!

There are quite a few of us 6 speed and 5 speed swaps on the board. Many of us can answer any questions you have. It's very straightforward.

As for transmissions for a 6 speed swap, there's Getrag, and Getrag. Get the Getrag.

Excellent! I'm trying to assemble a crude parts list.. so far trans(duh), clutch, fw, hydraulics(mc/sc?), shifter, drive shaft, pedals.... what else am I missing?

So I've run in to a problem... and that is that I have no idea what pedals to get, or rather, which ones I can get that will work.

I've heard that Tilton is a good place to look, but again I have no idea which set to get.

I've read over that, and while it is very informative and tells me things like I need pedals and a gear lever.... it doesn't really cover WHAT pedals or gear levers.

There's only one set of manual pedals for the E34. Rather than using an OEM gear lever, I'd just skip it and get a SSK.

Short Shift Kit. I'm a fan of UUC's kit.

Manual one still has that screen, just doesn't do anything.

For the shift lever I have a friend that works at a dealer so I was exploring OEM parts first... the Z3 lever in particular.

The shift bushing you have listed in your mechanic's invoice... do you know if that was the mysterious guibo I've been hearing of?

Nope, part number 2 in this drawing is the guibo.

Think of it as a damping coupling between the transmission output shaft and the input side of the driveshaft. The shift bushings in that list are more likely to be the nylon bushings that go on the end of the transverse selector rod of the shifting assembly.

The main issue with all the OEM parts is they use a plastic "ball" on the shifter itself, which wears down over time, until it is a sloppy mess. So, it will feel great for ~20k miles, then get progressively worse and worse.

As for pedal sets, there's usually quite a few available from the usual breakers all over the country. You can use any E34 manual pedal set, so it shouldn't be that difficult.
