View Full Version : Need to measure hub bore, stock jack question

So I just bought a 91 525i, and I'm pretty sure the previous owner neglected to put the hubcentric rings in because once I hit 60mph, my car gets the shakes.
Now, I searched the forum but all I could find were complaints on the stock jack. But that's the only jack I have right now and I absolutely need to measure the hub bore of wheels so I can order the appropriate rings.
So whats the deal with the stock jack? Is it going to fail while I'm trying to take one wheel off? Can I jack the car up from the stock jack position without any major worry?
*ALSO* If anyone knows what size rings I would need for 18x8 Mille Miglia Wheels that would be a great bit of info to share.

Then perhaps doing a search first would have easily yielded the information you wanted. These are questions that have been asked literally thousands of times here. You rings question is in the FAQ.

Perhaps if you paid attention to that widowmaker macro you'll see that he's answering your question about using the stock jack, as the stock jack is the widowmaker. The fact that he's got a sense of humor about it just makes it a little more fun for everyone, except you apparently.
So far as your wheels go, what wheels do you have on the car? Perhaps a little more info in the question will get more info in the response. GIGO.

Do any of you read the first post on a thread before you throw in your smartass comments?
If the two of you had read my first post you would've noticed that I did search the forum, and I did state what wheels I have.

geez man take a chill pill.
1. use the stock jack with caution...you know...block the wheels, level ground, emergency brake, Don't eat yellow snow...:rolleyes
2. I can pretty well guarantee your MM wheels are E39 bore like 99% of all aftermarket BMW wheels. I've almost never seen anyone use anything other than E34-E39 adapter rings (documented in the FAQ). If you are unsure use a set of inside measuring calipers and check for yourself. better yet spend the $15 bucks on a set of standard rings and see if they fit.
P.S. a floor jack is cheap

wow, how about a little less hostility from the op?
if your rims are off of an e39, then the hub size will be 74.1. our cars are 72.56.
about the jack, it is very unstable but if you have to use it, then do it but i wouldnt crawl under the car with only the jack supporting it. if you are going to do some work on your car, then invest in a real jack and some jack stands. they are a life saver

i won't trust the factory jack, theres a nice dent in my door lined up perfectly with the jack space that i'm 99.99999999999999999999% positive is from the stock jack. i pulled it out and replaced it with a cheap bottle jack.

So the rings I would need to buy would need a 74.1mm Outer Diameter and 72.56mm Inner Diameter?
Please correct me if I'm wrong
Also, any good shops in Maryland where I could find the rings?

Those are the standard rings used. tireshops, ebay, online tire retailers should all have them

I can't believe the hate for the stock jack myself (mines not the same as the one in the demo-pic tho)
Yesterday I used it to remove both front struts in the pouring rain on a gravel driveway! of course, I wasn't stupid enough to lay under the car, just saying it's good at what it does if you appreciate the physics! (and have at least one axle-stand)
btw, new low springs are excellent. No more 4wd... just some serious rake. Took 1hr20 to do both sides one-at-a-time.

Therein lies the problem. While you understand how to use it safely, a lot of people are stupid and get killed.
