Basically just a nylon (or maybe rubber?) strap that hangs from below the rear of the car, and drags along the ground. They popped up a few years ago, but are still out there. I think someone once told me it was to remove built up static electricity in the car by grounding it.

My question is, does anyone actually know what these are?

(and no, they aren't tow straps)

Any actual benefit to them? Or just some weird propaganda?

They are everywhere over here. Yeh they stop static build up so when old people and women (usually) hop out of their cars they don't get a small zap from the metal. It doesn't really do anything except look ultra ugly.

Man, people are dumb.

There is a much easier way to prevent getting shocked when you get out of the car- before you get out, hold onto the body of the car as you get out. Technically you are still receiving the shock, but it pass through you instead of to you so you won't even feel it.

Just showed up a few years ago?

Damn canada IS behind. Used to see those in the 70's, 80's around here, haven't seen it in decades, except for gas company vans....

My parents use to see this in Europe in the '70s, '80s, and even the '90s before we moved to the states. Seems that they're pretty popular everywhere except here.

I think I asked someone about these before, they said that they're for older cars that have generators instead of alternators, they don't have any affect on cars with alternators but of course the companies that sell them aren't going to say that :rolleyes
