Hey guys, My new HPF oil scavenge pump arrived today.. installed it and let me tell you , cant even hear it with the car off, Oh man, finally, Mine was really loud, I had the tilton and its huge compare to the HPF which is very compact. Im posting because there was a discussion about it a few days that I was following and went ahead and gave it a try after chris from HPF posted about his pump being in their cars and being really quiet.. I can post pics

you can also put a led light bulb in near the head light switch to light up when is on..

I love the fact that is so quiet, the tilton gave me great service dont get me wrong, but the noise was unbearable,

wherew do u have it mounted, what bracket are u using? Ill post pics in a while

i have a blinking led and a lit on/off toggle (BOTH OF WHICH ONLY SHOW ITS FUNCTIONING ELECTRONICALLY)

currently mounted under the car near my seat position, made a bracket using some old tranny mounts.

No, didn't mean to imply you should buy it from another vendor...just asked if it was a gear-type pump like that one.

Also, for mounting pictures see my build thread in my sig

Yes, you can rebuild the tilton pump...which is actually a Flojet pump. Order any rebuild kit for a 2100 series pump and make sure the kit is Viton.

Thanks a lot for the info Don, Ill look into buying the rebuild kit and either keep it as a spare pump or sell it to a friend,

tilton.

Hmmm, didn't know that. Thanks. Bought my last one from Mocal...which is also a Flojet. But based on the price from Tilton, a warranty sounds nice!!

when i was doing my build i spoke to them many times about the proper setup to insure the pumps life, so if in case of mechanical failure it is solely the pump :)

FYI i saw many different 12v pumps at the local northern tool

even this one which is really similar to the HPF

That northerntool unit looks to be a cam style...not a gear type I believe. Should still work...I mean the real deal here is finding capatible gaskets systems and installation.

1. I would always vent a pump on the suction side.
2. I would never have the discharge lower than the oil level especially anywhere close to the oil drain in the pan.

What were the hints Tilton shared with you? Did they tell you that the back side of the pump (where it mates to the motor) is NOT sealed and grit/dirt can get in there and ruin the diaphram?

not saying to buy that one in particular but there are several at northern that are nice pumps. with warranties.

tilton told me:
1. run a collector to aid in cooling and in cavitation.
(they will not service a pump ran right off the turbo)
2. also suggest 3ft+ from source to aid in cooling.
3. from the amount of suction created they also suggest a vent (crankcase)
to save the turbo bearing from stress.
4. if vented they will not service an open vent due to moisture and debris.

i knew about the sealing issue on the tilton case, no problems on my end. (been keeping an eye on it)

aside from someone posting a link to ebay pump not HPFs is there documentation that HPF is using gear style pump.

Yeah, I vented my reservoir to the valve cover. About the only thing I didn't do of what you listed is 3' from source. I prolly have about 24". I do however have my turbo dumping into an aluminum reservoir so I'm sure that's providing some cooling effect.

I wrapped some foam around the gap between the pump head cover and the motor to stop debris from getting in the backside of the pump.

I posted the ebay pump only since I'm sure HPF is using a gear type pump. So does STS and others. It really is the best choice imho.

A lot of great info about something that is crucial in most bmw e36 turbo systems and frequently overlooked. dcvee, why the discharge of the pump shouldnt be below oil level? thanks

Well, depending on the pump charateristics, it could disperse air bubbles which the oil pump/sump can pick up. That would not be a good thing on bearings. No sense in taking that chance in my book.

Ok I had the discharged below oil level and flip the pump around last night, and now the "in" from turbo is down and the discharged is up above oil level. :stickoutt thanks!

That's EXACTLY what I did on my latest project. Made better sense since the 30deg angle of the engine puts the oil about 2.5"(est) below the bottom of the block on the drivers side. Also, due to my pump location, it's a shorter, easier run with less congestion.

The dipstick tube should be a clue. He either welded in a bung or tapped the pan.

Didnt talk about that with them, are they running collectors with their kits? I do have a collector, its just not on now since I changed the pump, (put new oil lines) etc. the pump is amazing, with the car off cant even hear it...

SiGmA

I would use a vented collector, it is bad for the turbo seals. Call Garrett and ask them about it.

When I talked to HPF about it they said you dont need a collector.

Your call. Call Garrett. It's not exactly a good idea to pull vacuum on the turbo seals. Run a collector.
