View Full Version : Differential Leaking

I had my new diff (3.64lsd) put in a month or so ago. Prior to putting it in I changed the fluid and never noticed a leak at all. I took the diff out of my parts car and it was very clean and didn't appear that it was leaking when it was on that car. After I drive the car it seems to leak from the front of the diff so I'm guessing the front seal? The rate at which it is leaking is more than what my engine leaks so it's a bit concerning considering how much less fluid is in there.
Just wondering how big of an issue this is? Should I have it checked out asap (I'm at school so I can't do any work myself right now and don't have a ton of time to take it to a shop) or would it be fine to keep on re-filling it?
I've read that with some of the newer diffs if you filled it too much then it will leak out till it gets to the right level. Do our diffs have that feature?
Any input appreciated. Just trying to figure out how big of a deal this is and if there any common leaks with these diffs.

A bad pinion leak is not something that I would want to let go. Straight forward to change, have to remove the DS to do it, be sure to mark the pinion nut location before removing it.

Well, technically, they all have vents, so they'll all leak if overfilled.

Hmmm ok thanks. I checked last night and its definitely leaking from the front of the differential. I couldn't get under the car much since I didn't have a jack with me but it looks like right around there area where the input side meets up with the driveshaft. I'm guessing that's the pinion leak you mentioned? What do you think the labor would be fix it? 3 hours?

I don't know what the KSD time is on it. The procedure can be done by either taking the diff or the DS out. I guess I should have been clearer above, the CV has to be unbolted (and removed) from the pinion flange, the DS can stay in place if you lower the diff. When I've had to do these, I remove the diff. It would take me 1-1.5 hours on average, but I am slow.

Thanks for all the help. I'm going to call a couple shops around my school and get some quotes.
