BIG THANKS to JT (Got psi) for doing the engine assembly, we were supposed to do it together, but
with different schedules etc he basically put together the whole thing. Also sorry for the lack of engine build pictures, but my camera got stolen with the pictures on it 

Fuel System:

- 60lb injectors
- Bosch 040 in-tank pump, modified hanger with a modified -8 bulkhead fitting
- Bosch 044 in-line external pump -8 inlet/outlet
- Both running on direct wired relays using 10ga wiring, and 30amp fuses

Turbo/Tuning/Electornics

- Turbonetics T66 ball bearing turbo
- Converted to OBDI and using TRM tuning, multi-tune setup for 93, 93+meth, race gas, and anti-lag
- Aquamist HFS-5 water/meth system using two 1mm jets
- Custom 8 gallon meth tank
- Blitz sbc id III electronic boost controler
- PLX wideband
- Stri-Racing boost/vacuum, oil pressure, oil temperature, and water temperature gauges
- Aquamist gauge in the headlight switch location, A/F ratio and boost/vac gauges mounted on the steering wheel column pod, oil press/temp, water temp gauges and EBC mounted In a custom sunglass holder

I was initially going to go with ICS/Nick G factory obdII tuning until I realized the m50 block did not have a hole in the back for the obdII crank sensor. Plus the fact that they couldn’t do it remotely brought the problem of shipping my car over there…what if the car did not want to run, or had some other problems. Plus I wanted to properly break the engine in. Geaorge was very generous and a huge help with a bunch of questions I had. I’m really bummed it didn’t work out.

also forgot to mention, i just got back from dropping off the parts to get ceramic coated...they told me two weeks :(

But i also found out that they do powdercoating and said it would be about 65-70 to powdercoat my meth tank a nice wrinkle black. I ordered a filler neck for it and once that arrives i'm going to weld it on and drop it off as well :buttrock:

it's ok, it's back in good hands again

do you have any pics of the pumps before they went into the tank?

i forgot to take one, its a bosch 040 in-tank pump. I basically used two -8 to m12x1.5 fittings. One goes into the the pump and one goes through the hanger. Then they are both internally tapped and tied together using a adapter, so its a custom bulkhead fitting. It's nice because it puts the pump at perfect height and there are no hoses to worry about. I also made a custom support that the pump "rests" on in the siphon chamber

4/23 12:15 AM - made some decent progress tonight after work.

first i drilled a hole for the level sensor in the tank. Then i had my father (machinist) make me a little weld on bung that i could weld on the tank, and he tapped it for the fitting. So i drilled a 1/2" hole for that and welded it on.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v169/325is_MadBimmer/m3%20build/IMG_0262.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v169/325is_MadBimmer/m3%20build/IMG_0261.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v169/325is_MadBimmer/m3%20build/IMG_0263.jpg

then i decided to weld on my drain fitting on the oil pan. welding a bung directly on the oil pan and having a 90* hose end go into that was not acceptable by me because i feel that with the angle of the oil pan that will create a low spot. Probably not a big deal, but with only a bit of more work i cam up with this. I had my dad machine me a little pipe with a perfect od/id for the weld on fitting, and then i cut it on a angle, welded the bung onto that and then, welded the pipe onto the oil pan.

end result

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v169/325is_MadBimmer/m3%20build/IMG_0266.jpg

and man, i'm having a tough time with welding aluminum, im having trouble getting everything to puddle together and when i try to add the filler in, it just buggers up and runs away from the puddle. Clean rod, therally cleaned area...I got to have JT come by and give me a few pointers on aluminum. I think i'm not setting my machine up correctly or something. Or maybe when i was watching JT flying with his torch on some aluminum, it was just his badassness that made it look so easy...

i'm having a tough time with welding aluminum, im having trouble getting everything to puddle together and when i try to add the filler in, it just buggers up and runs away from the puddle. Clean rod, therally cleaned area...

How many amps are you using? Alum requires quite a bit more amps than stainless. Try more heat/amps next time see if that helps.

Looking great!! :)

well doing my fan shroud i used a peak of like 90 amps, doing that i had it ALL the way up to like 165-170. Thats when it finally sort of started coming together. I feel like that was too much than it should have needed.

10 gallons of meth set me back $40 at a local speed shop in my area. I think 4/gal is pretty damn good when 93 octane is about 2.4/gal :buttrock

I would do it as a safety precaution if running 100% meth. Just tap the lid with 1/8 NPT and get a NPT to nylon hose push to connect fitting.

Most people with a coolingmist setup run 50/50.

Luke, look around the center of the car, right behind the back seat in the trunk. There is a grommet with some wires going through it that comes out above the gas tank. You can push the tubing through there and run it under the car with the fuel lines to the engine bay.

20gal for what? Are you not going to use the stock gas tank? Or 20gal for methanol? If for meth, that is crazy over-kill. My tank is overkill and i plan to run quite a bit of meth.

anyways, wrapped it up for the night. Aside from what i posted above, i did the following

- paint the euro tank mounting brackets
- welded the strut tower bracket on, touched up the welds with paint
- rivited the firewall mount on and painted the rivit heads
- made a boost controller solenoid bracket to go under the exp. tank, tacked on washers/nuts for proper fit and easy assembly.
- cut and installed engine bay heat insulation (i may do some more)

heat shield is right under the car for the motor mount, i'm also considering making my own with better coverage.

Also, any of you guys do the front subframe/motor mount reinforcement? I'm really thinking about doing it now, especially with the UUC motor/trans mount. What do you guys think? Instead of waiting on the "kit" i think i'm just going to make my own. :)

silicone? Hmmm, i never had a problem with it on my other car and i didnt have silicone on it, just a small zip-tie around each hose acting as a hose clamp.

Luke, I ran IE poly mounts for 2k wo reinforcements and one of the ears took a beating and had some decent cracks. I installed reinforcements at that time, and welded the cracks up and ground them down. Looks good/

I used zipties last time, they worked great. I blew one off (wo ziptie) at the track, threw a ziptie on it and raised the boost 6psi and was good to go. It stayed on for the next 1k until my motor ate it.

What is that solenoid for?

Jim, what type of heatshield did you make? I think I threw out my stock heatshield that covers the LCAB, I need to source a new one, along with a late model battery post holder. And I prolly should consider repainting my mounting brackets with red, I have a pint or more left...

Meth tank is now 100% complete. Decided to drill some holes through the plastic trunk support piece and have bolts go through it. Then i welded on little brackets to the tank. Holds down firmly, will most likely make a small rubber wedge to tap in between the top of the tank and the top of the trunk so it doesnt rock or possibly crack the plastic support under heavy cornering. Monday i'm going to drop it off for some powdercoating :)

It should look HAWT. And Cam, i'm sure there is a way to set you up with a BEEFY meth tank without altering your current setup. If there is a will there is a way baby!

anyways, small/boring update

after finishing the tank mounts, i decided to go after the fuel pump wiring (have been dreading it)

Both pumps have their own dedicated relay and 30amp inline fuse, both pumps are grounded back at the battery. Using all 10ga wiring. Neatly taped the whole harness. THAT was time consuming!

and at the end i just pulled out the front subframe to get ready for some reinforcement.

How the heck did you get this to fit in the engine bay? That shroud sticks out like an inch or two and that fan is like three inches thick by itself. I have installed 3 of those 57mm radiators and there is only about three inches of room in between the radiator and the engine pulleys.

Well I was looking at the shroud rather then the radiator, so in that case you are correct. And no its not obvious to have a constricting shroud over the front of the radiator with a small pusher fan rather than just an open radiator with a pusher fan flush mounted.

Love your car combo, that e30 is sick man! Is that henna or something different?

I had a VERY clean tastefully modded 89 325is while i had the estoril initially. And when i got rid of both of the cars it was a terrible mistake haha! The e30 went to m triple, who's last e30 went on the cover of the roundel, so i couldnt have picked a better buyer! Estoril obviously is back in my hands, now i just have to get the e30 back :help and i'll be allllll set!

You would be very surprised how much a proper fan shroud can do...why do you think the factory cars use them? :shifty

anyways, not much of an update but some progress. I didnt get to work on it on sunday because i was just pure lazy haha and watched tv all day.

i was looking over my 95's engine bay and i was trying to figure out where i can mount the catch can and fuel pressure regulator. Requirements were, shortest hose used possible for both items and have them be easily accesible.

I came up with this idea, that way the FRP gauge is in a clear location, while the adjustment screw is right there and the hoses will be nicely tucked. With the catch can i wanted the same principle. Nice hose from the valve cover and then right down to the exhaust vacumm valve.

Mckinney Racewerks with the supplied mounting hardware, self tapping screws? I dont think so...

i'm thinking straight out the the valve cover running along the nuber one intake runner, turn 90* and pay somewhat on top of the FPR. The output will run right on top of the throttle body and then turn down right after it. Thinking about it it sounds like it will be messy, but i think it will turn out prettty clean.

also, just placed a order for a synapse valve. Brett from TRM just woke me up haha.

Im actually having my friend at his exhaust/repair shop weld me up a bracket that uses the intake manifold bracket bolt too! (matter of fact he should have it done...)

Thank man, you have to love it to keep going haha. This car has been taking me little while to complete. But it's tough getting about 8 hours total to work on it during the week and the weekeds, but it's coming along! And man, i'm excited to finish it.

here is the painted bracket

tonight i mostly just wired the aquamist pump, ran the nylon line up the rear shock tower, through the rear seat frame, along the drivers side panel, through the fuel level sensor cover, and along with the fuel lines under the car.

Then reassembled the trunk so i'm completly done back there!

sorry man, but the back seat and trunk are all assembled now...You know where the factory amplifier is? Well my wires/hose follow the wires for the amplifier. The i have the wire keep going along the drivers rocker panel area, and the hose went though the fuel level sensor (above the fuel tank) and under the car. The power/ground wires i ran under the rubbery cushion on the front side of the spare wheel tub.

I got the PITA stuff out of the way. Wired up the aquamist, which although not bad, pretty time consuming. I wanted everything to be tucked nicely so i taped everything up and used zip-ties to secure everything.

I also finished running the fuel and meth lines to the engine bay, and fuel pump wiring under the car. Everything is secure and i'm thinking about making a nice alloy shield to rund along it under the car. I think i'll save that for next winter...

started to run/mount the obd1 harness. Lenghtened the cables that bolt into the power terminals on the pass. fender. Tapped the injector ground/power wires and installed a in-line fuse. Wired up the HSV.

QUESTION, what are the additional two round connectors for next to the fuse box? The obd1 harness has just one plug...

install turbo, wg, down pipe and wg pipe
assemble oil return hose
assembly oil supply hose and make a .040" restrictor (i know this is recommended for garret ball bearing turbos, im assuming same would go for a turbonetics unit?)

clean up/tuck some more of the hfs-5 and gauge wiring in the car.

well it would be a pita assembling the motor/trans while the motor is hanging on the lift....

also with the motor/trans together the "bang up the engine bay" risk goes up :eyecrazy

andrezbim
05-07-2009, 12:36 PM
Having done it both ways, I prefer with the trans installed - its managable without banging up the engine bay... and you can drop the engine down to the ground to help with installing trans. Time savings with the bellhousing bolts makes it way worth it for me.

LukeG
05-07-2009, 01:08 PM
i crank up the front of the motor so the trans is tilted and it takes about 10 minutes to start and tighten all of the bolts. Plus i cut out the insulation around the trans...worthless pile

QUESTION...

since i'm using stock dme tuining i have to pick one of two options.

hook up my plx sm-afr to send a narrow band signal to the ecu using the plx wideband sensor. This would require tapping a couple of wires and adding a resistor/caps to the stock harness.

just weld on a second bung and just plug the factory o2 in. Much simpler me thinks and i think thats what i'm going to do.

input?

Geno325is
05-07-2009, 06:50 PM
yeah id vote for second bung for stock o2

SiGmA
05-07-2009, 07:49 PM
I too vote for the stock O2. I used my Innovate LC1 as my narrowband when I was stock, and while it worked, MPG dropped directly after... Perhaps it is because it refreshes differently than the stock O2. I'd use a stock one. Plus, its easier to troubleshoot..

worked untill 5 today and i got to work on the car from like 6-11 and made pretty decent progress.

- Made a -10 oil return line
- installed turbo
- made a -4 supply line
- installed wastegate
- installed wastegate pipe and the down pipe
- installed the wideband o2
- installed the ground cable to motor mount
- hooked up all of the engine management sensors, alternator/starter wires and tucked all of the wiring
- installed the heart of the ecu

question...i hooked everything up, ecu, grounds, power to fuse box, cut ews wire #7 at the fuse box connector (#66 at ecu) and i turned the key to "on" to see if the fuel pumps would turn on and got nothing. I then used a jumper off the battery and jumpped the stock fuel pump "trigger" wire and both the pumps started whining. So the stock fuel relay is either bad (have to check) or it's not getting triggered.

any ideas? Maybe something needs to be hooked up for the ecu to trigger the relay?

Also, my climate control does not turn on :confused

i'm in the garage right now, just installed the driveshaft and about to get started on the rear supension.

SiGmA
05-09-2009, 05:42 PM
Jump power/ground to the relay pins 85/86 and see if it clicks. Also, to jump the fuel pump and verify it has proper wiring to the relay, jump pins 30/87 on the connector. I'd do that just to make sure it is wired right.

Regarding CC, did you dick around with anything around it?

LukeG

well i didnt jump the fuel pump "power" wire, i jumped the stock fuel pump trigger wire, which i have wired to trigger both of the fuel pump relays that i put in. And they latch and power both of the pumps no problem.

I also just noticed that the aquamist system does not turn on. The aquamist system i have wired power in to the injector + wire. So that wire is not getting power, which could explain the fuel pumps not turning on. I wonder if this junk yard ecu may be the culprit...

as far as the climate control, no i didnt dick around with it, could something have possible been unplugged when i removed the obc/sunglass holder?

| 6:00 pm |

Ok, did some more testing.

removed the fuel pump relay and turned the key on. battery voltage at pins 30 and 86.

checked continuity from pin 85 to ground and got .3 ohms

checked continuity from pin 87 to the fuel pump plug and got 1.4k ohms, and from fuel pump plug and ground and got 34 ohms. it should have .1-.3 ohm continuity from pin 87 to the fuel pump plug shouldnt it?

| 7:15 pm |

scrap my 6pm test, i pulled a deee de deee and was testing on the dme relay and not the fuel pump.

So i jumped pins 30 and 87 on the fuel pump relay socket and sure enough the pumps started whaling. So the relay is not getting triggered...

ALSO about my aquamist system not turning up, i found the inline fuse to be blown, hmmmm not right.

did a continuity test between the aquamist power wire and ground and got 10.1 ohms...SHIT, i must have fucked up the wiring somewhere :( Started doing a few simple tests and then opened up the aquamist box and did more testing. I removed the power (+12v-in) wire and ground wire (0v-in) from the board and did a continuity test between the two terminals on the board and got like 9.x ohms....So the aquamist board has a internal short :(

Well at least i know that my wiring is not the problem. Now i'm not sure what i should do. I can try and repair the aquamist board or wait untill monday to call vivid racing.

How did you exactly plug the stock FPR fitting and ICV valve fitting?? Im about to tap my manifold... and want to get rid of both permanently.

And, I agree with Cam ^^^

BTW, where did you source your ground straps too??

LukeG
05-16-2009, 02:19 PM
i drilled/tapped the holes and i installed a bolt into them with sealent on there. Might be a bit overboard but it was simple with readily available parts. Another option is to just get a rubber cap...or a hose and put a plug on the other end of it.

i just bought the oem ground straps from bmw

yeah, i dont remember what size tap i used, but i have a collection of all kinds of random bolts/hardware. So that way it threaded in nicely and sealent did it's magic.

Now how does that icv fitting hold up to boost. It just snaps into the manifold using the o-ring. Anyone have problems with boost leaks there?

Mine blew out once in a long 4th gear pull! But, as instructed by this (BF.c) forum, I used a plastic epoxy and put it back in! No problems now for over 6,000miles.

Luke, I removed the o-ring and bought some plastic epoxy. I've heard a product called "plastic weld" is great, but I couldn't find it. This stuff worked WAY better than the JBWeld I used previously, as it had started cracking in 2k while this stuff hasn't budged at all!

Today i found out that the 2 fittings i need for the fuel rail are on back order and that no other manufacturer makes them, so i started browsing google and found this cool place that carried the fittings i need and for cheaper too (given they are not really a name brand) $10 cheaper/fitting for the -8 o-ring to -6 hose 90* hose end.

Fuel rail is done, just have to weld on some brackets and install a shreader (sp) valve for fuel pressure testing. Fuel rail is machined/drilled on a mill using a digital readout and using two 90* o-ring fittings on each end and a -6 return in the middle. Would there be interes in these if i were to make some? I have extra material and i dont think anyone is selling quality dual feed fuel rails...

installed the fuel rail today, my dad really did a quality job here. The brackets i decided do not even need to be welded on. He machined a radius into them and they hug the rail and hold it tight. Also installed a schraded valve for easy testing. (anyone know where i could purchase more of these 1/8npt schrader valves? i used this one out of my fuel pressure test kit)

charge piping is done as well. The only things left to do are; make the oil cooler lines, run the crankcase vent hose and install a fitting into the intake and run the dump line for my bpv. Car should be running monday, if not monday then wednesday.

Luke, it's been a fantastic build thread so far and thanks for sharing all your information.
One potential issue I see is the radiator shroud at the front. Shrouds work really well when they are used at the rear of a radiator and they'll pull air very efficiently. Your setup will restrict flow and negate the potential ram air effect as the car moves forward.
In my opinion you would be far better served by leaving the radiator open and mounting the fan hard up to the radiator with a a foam insert so it can't damage the core.

why would the factory a/c condenser (pusher) have a shroud then? If i have a problem i will fix it, but i do not think i will.

-8 fuel rail with -6 feed on each end and a -6 return in the middle. 90* oring fittings. Fuel rail machined on a mill, o-rings have machined grooves and injector holes drilled with a proper fuel injector port tool (which cost me $$$)

Ripped up the roads a little bit today! Put about 35 miles on her so far and everything mechanicly seems good!

- Car is very loud, it sounds good, but it will deff attract attention. Muffler in near future me thinks lol
- stock temp gauge is at 3/4 but my stri gauge shows 195-205, never out of that range (that seems normal right?)
- oil temp was about 180-190

- car runs pretty rich! it wont idle because it's pig rich there. It idles fine when cold, but once warmed up i need to keep blipping the throttle
- cruise i'm seeing anywhere from 11.5-14.5, its a bit all over but overall pretty smooth
- under boost it's also rich. Around 11:1

one problem, my spal does not turn on. If i deleted my a/c should the fan still get turned on? I'm using the stock a/c condenser fan plug and it's supposed to get triggered by the coolant temp switch on the radiator.

Gonna take it to euro-charged sometime early next week to strap on the dyno and log some data so i can get my second chip and hopefully lean the car out a bit all over the board.

I think you wired the coolant temp sensors in backward. I've had that happen before...

Did you pressure test the intake system? Might have a leak if cruise is so far out.

Temps are right around what they should be.

Are you running the stock fan switch? Its a 91/99*C switch IIRC, so that's prolly why the fan didn't turn on. Or a bad relay?

Shuasha
07-03-2009, 07:07 PM

How could i have wired the sensors backwards? The obd1 harness has two connectors and i have two sensors in the head...Does it matter which connector to which sensor?

the fan should have turned on. It got to about 210* idling and still didnt turn on...

I will pressure test the intake, but i'm pretty dang sure everything is sealed tight. It will be more evident once we strap it on the dyno and do some data logging.

Luke, did you try jumping across the pins on the switch to see if the fan comes on?

i didnt jump across the pins, but i jumpered the two signal wires to ground and the fan kicked on. So i'm thinking the sensor itself might be bad...

Yes, it does matter which goes to which sensor.

Ahhhh. I'll swap them.

ok so temp gauge is fixed, swapping the connectors did the trick.

pulled the codes and got "evap control valve" "lambda control" and also code "65" that was not listed in the peake manual...so i'm not sure what that code is.

Car still does not idle, i did a propane test to see if i could find any vac leaks, but did not detect any. Also if it had a vacuum leak it should be running lean and not pig rich right?
in boost it seems to be pretty damn smooth and powerful, but pretty damn rich (anywhere from "rich" which is below 10.1:1 to about 10.5:1.) I'm thinking that it's just the tune here that TRM went on the safe side with.

Can the tune really be that far off that it wouldnt idle? I think i'm missing something.

The last thing i have to do is route the BPV back into the intake, which i'm waiting on some couplers/clamps to be able to do. I doubt that makes any difference though.

I'm planning on taking it to the dyno probably tuesday or friday so i can do a few runs up to 5.5k or so and log the boost, rpm and a/f ration and see what TRM thinks.

Got my new chip from TRM and boom, car idles, air fuel ratios are much better. Makes me feel good that it's not something i did :D

idle - fluctuates from 14.4-15.0
cruise - same is idle
50% throttle - 12.5-13
wot - rich, about 10.8:1

i'm going to take it to the dyno next week to do a few low boost runs. Low boost is off the 14 psi WG spring which puts me at about 12.5 psi at the manifold. Get some data for TRM to make a few adjustments, finish breaking it in and crank the boost up!

the car is so fun to drive now, really really hard to stay out of boost haha

question, radiator temp sensor that triggers the fan. anyone know where i could get a "stubby" sensor? My 90* elbow for my turbo intake is right there where the sensor sticks out. I tried modifying the stock sensor where i cut the connector off and bent the pins down and soldered wires to them, but that sensor is bad and doesnt trigger the fan. I bought a new one from the dealer to find out the connector/pins are designed diferently where i can't really hack it up and shorten it.

other alternatives i'm thinking about

- wire in a switch where i turn the fan on when i please (meh)
- weld a bung to the radiator in a different location and install the sensor there (meh)
- any simple sensor installtion ideas guys?

i really would prefer to have the fan triggered automatically instead of me doing it via a switch. Throw out your ideas

The welder man! :stickoutt Looking stunning Luke, congrats.

What kit or where can I look for that oil cooler kit you have? Also, are you using full engine oil pressure for the turbo or do you run any kin dof oil restrictor before the turbo?

That fuel rails looks money! You said they don't offer it anymore?:(

the oil cooler kit is completly pieced together by me.

the fuel rail i/my father made. If you are interested in one, shoot me a pm

i have a 90* elbow for the turbo inlet that has the air filter sitting at the foglight hole in the bumper

And, how is the fuel rail doing??:)

you can see the 4" to 3.5" elbow in this picture. After the elbow i have a short piece of 3.5" alloy pipe with a barb welded on for my bpv recirc, then after that is the maf and then filter. Filter ends up being by the fog light.

i will take more detailed pics once the car is cleaned and a few little things taken care of.

took it over to the dyno today and was quite surprised, especially with it being a dyno dynamics. Laid down 453hp and 430tq at the wheels @ 14psi.

93 octane sir

I'm going to be doing plugs/oil change friday. I'll probably turn up the boost a few psi after that

Nice numbers...next time ask them to dyno in shootout mode...so that we know the correction factor hasn't been possibly fudged to give Dynojet-equivalant numbers. Or you can have them give you the print out of the log of the pull, which is a big text file. It will list the CF in there. Did they hookup the MAP sensor and log boost? What about AF ratio via the Autronic wideband the dyno has?

Very nice, hows the A/F curve?

You're running the Clutchnet red, correct? Can't wait to get my Clutchnet PP and disk delivered so I can hit the streets/dyno again.
