will OBDI codes provide any specific detail about an issue?
I changed my front timing cover last year and had to re-time the cams and reinstall the vanos as part of the project. I have the cam locking tools and marked them in addition to locking them down. One was "off" slightly which according to the Bentley is correct. I guess there was an issue with (ironically) a rough idle and the cams were slightly changed as part of a TSB. For anyone who has done this you know what I'm talking about.
But, since then, I'm getting a distinct skip at idle. At higher RPM's it feels perfect. All other obvious tune-up parts have been replaced in the past 10k miles. This issue started right after I did this work.
The other part of the story is that the timing cover kept leaking coolant so I had to re-do the job about 4 times and it's still not right. I'm mentioning that because I had to remove the original coil paks (14 years and 135k miles) the same number of times. I'm wondering if one is starting to flake out as a result.
With my Audi OBDII software, I could immediately narrow down the issue by checking the cam timing and each cylinder for misfires.
How do you do that with an OBDI car though?
