The car is a 1998 328i 5 speed.

I drove in the car once and the kid who owns it says..
3500rpm engine viberation, and around 6k or 7k it makes a noise and had a seems to be a power lose. The owner complains of bad gas milage, rattle/tick/knocking from the motor, and says the car feels a lot slower.

After searching I believe it is the vanos. I was thinking of replacing it with a stage 1 kit from dr. Vanos. I was going to bring the car to autozone to ha e the engine light scanned, hopefully the codes will lead toward the vanos.

Can any one tell me the code I should be looking for in the engine light. Also is there anything I can physicaly look at to see if it's gone bad? I was going to listen to the car tomorrow with the good popped to confirm were the noise is comming from.

The code for a stuck or bad vanos solenoid is P1519 (Camshaft Position Actuator). I know this because my car threw this a couple days ago. It was a simple fix for me because I got the plugs mixed up after reinstalling the intake manifold.

Ok, I'll get it scanned today.
