Bought a '95 540i m-sport last month. Previous owner converted to a 6-speed and all works well except the tech left the trans program warning on. I have read the posts on the conversion process and decided to ground the wire at the TCM (AGS) in the e-box under the hood. I took a look and the AGS was replaced with a separate harness and connectors that the tech created for the conversion.

Would you start testing in this converted wiring set or would you start at the driver side e-box (check control side) and find a ground there?

Many thanks!

you can't just post about a six-speed m-sport without posting pictures! :D
welcome to the board! someone will be along shortly to advise you.

Sorry for being unclear Binjamin (I'm still developing the art of brevity, wit and technical accuracy that others on this board have). I am using the BMW 1995 Electrical Troubleshooting Manual for reference. It calls the 1995 Electronic Transmission Control "AGS" for the 5-speed auto. I think this differentiates it from "EGS" which is the namesake of previous 4-speed autos, but - as my wife and kids note - I am often mistaken!

PS - I'll get some pics asap.

Ha, you are way too precise for this lot. I think we generally refer to them all as the TCU or Transmission Control Unit.

yep, easier to ground at the console location.

Wow, that's ... technical... Call it a TCU from now on like you'll see below and it'll avoid confusion.

Or EGS ;)

A is for adaptive (learning). nt sure even the 5 speed auto 540i was an AGS in the e34.
know the 5speed A5310s 525 and 4speeds were not.

AE - good clarification - thanks. I was reaching, but my guess was that the m-sport auto was AGS only because it was so late in the production run and was a 5-speed auto. ("Why would AGS be in the 1995 Elec Manual otherwise?" I said over a Duvel beer watching Tour of Flanders) Regardless, since my car is sans-auto-TCU (SATCU, Elizabeth is SATCHU!!??) I'm going for the wiring at the shifting console. Wish me luck!

I put a few pics on this link since I don't have enough posts here for authorization yet. Enjoy!

Looks like Ed's car.

The problem is that there are few grounds in the area. If you're not planning on using it for a lit shift knob, I would use the ground plugged into the bulb holder for the auto shift back light.

Also, FWIW, the system by '95 was called AGS, or AEGS, where earlier cars had EGS. We don't call the DME a PCM around here, might as well use the proper terminology.

Wow, that is a beauty! I need to come up to Asheville to see this thing.

Yes, I bought it from Ed and promised to continue the TLC (I've kept the red turtle!). The car is very happy to be out of Atlanta traffic and rolling across open "gran tourismo" roads.

Good input on the suggested grounding. I have found #10 ground and will test, then re-connect as advised. Thanks!

I have to go to Raleigh for work at least once a month. I'll offer a visit at cup-a-joe sometime soon. In the meantime if you want to visit WNC, I'll map out some great loops.
