I had mine painted but a year later it looks like Azz with the underlying silver now showing thru everywhere.. I like the balck better than the silver so anybody interested?

You can buy black trim? I love the shadow line look but haven't been happy with the longevity I've seen from other folks' attempts.

I'd be very interested, if the price is right.

depends on cost. The dealer price sucks "azz" for a full kit so if you could negotiate a decent discount you will likely get some interest. What source were you thinking of?

BMA, Abrahams?

Yes Abrahams Motorsport carries an 8 piece OEM BMW kit.. All the molding pieces which fit around the windows as came on the M Sport and M5

Abrahmams' kit includes the four pieces the dealership doesn't.. as I said elsewhere the dealership lists their set for $350 without the four straight pieces which Mel's includes.

Link? I don't see it listed with the other E34 stuff.

Well, just learned that the outlet mentioned has only one set and is apparently not open to a group buy unless I misunderstood . $599.00 I'd hoped with enough people we could get the Price down to maybe $400 but I balk at dropping $600 on window trim..

Its not listed on his site.. just confirmed via email.. he has one kit in stock . I thought maybe if enough people committed an order could be placed.. whatever.. I'm sure it looks better on the shelf and on their books than on our cars..

Mel's site says he's into group buys.. so I started the thread before contacting him thinking I'd contact him when we had a decent number but I asked anyway and he didn't sound open to ordering more even if we had the buyers.. so there it is.. I'll probably buy the dealer set with the upper pieces for $350 and paint the four straight pieces with many coats when I have the car painted..by someone I know will do it right.

$400 is still an absurd amount to pay. If it looks like azz a year later then you probably did something wrong.

yah I used a shop reccomended by the local BMW Indy, that's what I did wrong..
http://home.comcast.net/~cpkver8/images/opeel.bmp

as a matter of fact, the more I think about this shop the furiouser I get so I'm gonna name names... AMHERST STREET COLLISION in Nashua ,NH.. $1,400.00 they had my car for 12 days and the above picture should indicate what I got.. I expected the trim job to be done well not a spray coat of krylon which they half buffed off cleaning the car when I picked it up. Whoever thinks they do a good job there has their head up their a$$. Can I say a$$?

I'd grant you the dig if I had worded my thread differently but I don't think it suggests there was a lot ready to go and you just needed to add your name. I think it was evident it was a feeler type probe , a finger in the air to see which way the wind blows..

I would not pay more than 300 for a set of plastic strips. Even that's being generous.

What about powdercoating?

jehu
04-07-2009, 12:49 PM
Could it hurt to list everyone who if it were possible would buy? Maybe even send a non refundable $50 deposit if there was an agreement on an acceptable price.. If the seller isn't interested and simply wants to sell them one by one that's life but could it hurt to add our names if we'd be into it and who knows that maybe seeing a dozen guys expressing an interest if the price it right might be enough to make it happen. I'm an optimist ..:) so

It is hard to contemplate spending that much for a few strips of plastic defintley..

I've always heard these pieces are easy to bend getting off. Maybe grabbing a full set at a junk yard and doing them then you needn't be concerned if you break your originals coming off..

I painted the trim on my e28 for less than $20. It lasted for years, and still looked great when I sold it.
- 2 cans of Rustoleum High Performance Enamal Spray paint (semi-gloss black)
- 1 roll of painters tape
- pile of misc newspaper
Do work.

As long as it lasts a good while it sounds great... it really looks nasty when the chrome begins showing through..

I was only kidding but if you would like me to "Keep it real" as they say then let me put it like this.

Most group buys are start with a thread to see if there is interest FIRST, by board members. Then once you get a good solid interest you take that list back to the merchant, this gives you bargaining power.

By going to Mel first and getting shot down before you even started makes your point here moot.....he already said no! Even after i'm sure you said "but what if i had 10 or so people" he still said no.

You did it a#$ backwards and backwards equals FAIL! But what should we expect from a guy that paid $1400 for shadowline trim! Lol! There is some wind for your finger.:rolleyes

The strips come off quickly and easily just buy 25 clips and have at it. If you go the plasti-dip route and it goes to ass a few years later just take the trim off, peel off the remaining plasti-dip and re-apply it. I really don't understand people that mask off their car to shadowline. R&r of the trim is easier.

OK is there an implement you'd reccomend to pry them up like a large flathead screwdriver covered maybe with a microfiber cloth or can you just grasp with finger tips and pull?

You can do that.....or i think that BMW actually has some sort of trim removal tool or kit?

Stir Fry A Lot

I just used my fingers and a regular screwdriver. You can wrap it in cloth if you're concerned. I started at the rear of the arch by pulling it outward using just my hands. Once you get to the first bend figure out how to break it from the clips. That's it for the arch. For the two bottom window pieces be a bit more careful when pulling it up since it will lead to it having a slight curve if you reef on it too hard, just pull it up in small increments from the base. You won't crease or harm the trim as long as you don't go gorilla on it.

When you remove the arch check the chrome for remnants of the broken clips as it will hinder you from putting it back on when you're done.

Make sure to thoroughly paint the trim. Don't just lay it on some newspaper and spray it, make sure the top and bottom get the same love as the surface does (spray everything but the inside).

For the trim pieces at the base of the window, roll down the windows, grab a small piece of soft wood and a hammer, and just pound them off. You will need to take off the side mirrors.

Yah, wow..15 months ago that Shadowline trim also came with a new windshield, complete repaint of the hood and nose with two dent removal, both front fender repaint, rust rehab and repaint around the windshield when out for replacement and a few other small rust spot repairs.. the fenders however have orange peel and the "Shadowline" is flaking..

As for Mel , I started the thread before contacting him. I was planning on leaving after I emailed him but he replied before I left and I ended up not leaving so I came back to the thread. You can keep your wind..its all hot air and I prefer a cool breeze.

A minimum of 10 participants will be required.

$499 vs. $599 is not a decent price?
BTW-the Hella Euro smileys we sell are priced very competitively.
BMW and Hella have had about 3 price increases in the past 3 months.
