View Full Version : Disabling the EWS dme in my Non EWS car?

Story is, iv got the silver label DME in a 1994 525i. I ordered a chip for my car (#413) a while ago and was not able to start the car with it in. (yes it was put in correctly) I realized shortly after that the dme has EWS but my car did not come with it (as least as far as i know). my question is, how can i bypass the ews in the dme to allow for the motor to start with the chip ?
When the chip is plugged in the car will crank but will not start, but when the other chip is put in will start up instantly.
Anyone shed some light on this situation?

I do not know a lot about the EWS, if the car starts with one chip and not the other...logic tells me that your car having/not having EWS is not the issue.
Then again I have no idea how that system works.

why not order the right chip for the DME you already have?

Apparently my car didnt come with that DME so literally the only chip that would work is the TMS conforti ews disabling chip. which is 300 dollars i cannot afford when i already have a chip.

Well the EWS system apparently has a feature to stop chips that are not factory from working by disabling the spark/fuel supply. the car still turns into all poistions and cranks.. just no starting.

I think what you're going to find is that you need to buy the right chip for your specific DME.
if I remember correctly, someone at Turner told me once that there are several dozen DMEs for the E34.
they make different chips for each DME, maybe you can try selling yours to someone who needs it,
use the money you make from the sale and buy yourself a quality chip that'll be plug-n-play? :dunno

heres the thing, the previous owner purchased a new DME from the dealer that wasn't the red label DME number 413 that the 1993-1995 bmw's received. Not knowing this I ordered the chip, and a while ago realized that it would not work. the only difference however between my silver label, and the red label is the EWS. iv heard of bypassing it but if there isnt a good solid way (iv tried the cutting of wire...7? or 15.. i forget which one it was) to no effect. I might just pickup a dme from picknpull and see if it works and if not, return it

Pretty sure you're supposed to cut pin 66.

okay. And the whole reason behind this is that my key for the car was taken out of my hotel room this weekend, and havent found it since. I had to have the car towed home without a key, and now face a problem. They order keys by VIN but when i previously ordered a spare the key didnt even appear similar to my key in any way. so i sent it back. Basically the VIN key and the key that works for my car arent even the same. Right now im dealing with a problem because i have no way to get a key cut for my vehicle if theres no data to look it up by. My car also has a silver label DME which would indicate EWS II meaning my key needs a chip that communicates with the dme to start the car. however the dealer insists i do not have this. I can get in the car using my keyless entry remote but ccanot open the trunk or start the car.
I have no idea what to do.

OK, Let me see if I've got all the facts.
You have a 1993 m50 car. It should not have a silver label. You purchased a silver label performance chip. You had the key to your car stolen. You can't get a key cut because it appears the steering column or at least the lock cylinder are out of a different year car.
Am I missing anything? I'm not being sarcastic, just trying to stay up to speed. Did you have any interaction with the hotel?
For the key, I'd seriously suggest investing in a new lock cylinder, or go to the junkyard and get a cylinder with key. I probably have one come to think of it, I'll let it go for a very reasonable price.
Did the ignition key match the door locks btw?

OKAY, so i have a 1994 m50.
the previous owner had the dealer put in and program a silver label dme.
My car does NOT have ews II. (no module) the only thing different with the dme is that it wont accept performance chips that arent aligned with the dme (apparently) so my chip for a red label dme will NOT work without disabling the ews. I just have no idea how or if its even possible.
NOW...as far as the key goes, yeah i left my number with the hotel, they said they still havent turned up.
I got a key cut for my vin, Howeverr. does not fit in my lock.
Lucky for me when i drove 45 mins to get the key cut by a locksmith (because they did it in 1 hour compared to waiting 1 week for BMW's key that wouldnt work) I brang the key core to the pasenger side door, and he used a tool to then mark the numbers and cut a key that fit.
He gave me three keys totall and the key code to avoid this situation again.
I was happy after it fit signed the papers got in my car and started my drive home
little did I know i had left my 300 dollar cell phone on the trunk lid and it had flown off while i did a u turn, and was ran over by another car shortly after,
Overall. very shitty weekend/monday.

Wow man, I've totally had times like that. It sounds to me like you need to get a red label DME and chip. Perhaps you can trade someone? Did you say your chip won't work in a red label DME?

I have a 413 ecu laying around and I believe it's a red label (will check in the morning for you). The thing is: I pulled it from a junked 525 and I don't really know if it works (and have no way of testing it).
If you want it, 35 shipped and it's yours; it's a gamble since I can't know if it works or not (although I don't see why it wouldn't), but if it does, you got a ECU for 5 times less than what they go for.

Sorry man, the only 413 DME I have is for a project. I can look around for more if need be.

This is the sadest story I have heard this week. I was waiting for a country song, dead dog and ex-girlfriend to complete the cycle.
Love that BMW electronics when it works but curse it when it doesn't.
Thanks god I don't have EWS. Hope it all works out.

OK, I found the ECU. It is indeed a red label 413. It came out of GB36052, which is a 08/1993 525im (MY94).

Hm Id love to buy it but right now i dont get paid for two weeks, My employer gave me 4 hours this week which is only enough for gas...My chip is made for a red label DME so im almost 100 percent it will work. Theres more bad that happened this weekend but honestly im not in the mood to get into it.

Trust me, i know. The keys were just a start, and once i was done with that problem I sign the papers from the mobile locksmith and totally forget i set my phone down on the trunk.
Really..the lack of sleep and unfortunate events is killing me..
But i just cleaned and detailed my car and figure im going to take some pics and see if anyones interested. I still REALLY want a 5 spd e30 or 535.
And prices are still very low.

I don't understand why you don't just put a red label DME without EWS in there.

Thats what im going to do as soon as I can find a red label DME somewhere that i can afford... i was just tyring to avoid buying a DME if i can disable the ews in my current DME
Anybody?
